Job Description UncommonHigh School Math teachers work in grade teams and content teams topush students towards being self-guided learners. Our teachersbecome experts in their course content, and have a keen sense ofhow to motivate and inspire high school students. At the heart ofall math classes is a deep joy for mathematics. Math teachers use avariety of instructional strategies to cultivate student awarenessof how to make sense of, persevere through, and solve problems. Atthe conclusion of high school, students are prepared for academicautonomy and college preparatory work. Responsibilities 1.Instruction You’ll use a Math curriculum to teach content that mayinclude Algebra, Geometry, or Calculus and prepares students forAdvanced Placement (AP) and collegiate level coursework. You’llsupport students as they solve problems and think critically.
You’ll use your love of mathematics to foster confidence andmeaningful engagement with the subject for students. You’llcultivate the ability to construct and justify viable argumentsusing reasoning, math vocabulary, tools, and postulates. You’ll useyour passion for mathematics to build a community of self-guidedlearners where students feel safe, confident, and engaged. You’llwork with the Math department to determine academic and engagementgoals for students. 2. Data Analysis You’ll meet weekly with yourprincipal and/or instructional coach to analyze and respond totrends in student work samples and assessments. You’ll learn andimplement strategies to differentiate instruction for all learnersin your classroom. 3. School Culture You’ll build positiverelationships with students to ensure they feel seen, loved, andheard. You’ll partner with students’ families to ensure appropriateresources are available to support their child’s learning needs.
You’ll engage in practice-based professional development,mentorship, and coaching sessions. You’ll participate in weekly,school-wide meetings to cultivate community, model our core values,and encourage student achievement. You’ll partner with your gradelevel team to develop academic goals and practice instructionalstrategies. Qualifications A demonstrated commitment to supportingstudents’ social emotional and academic development An enthusiasmfor collaborating with internal and external partners in the bestinterest of students A self-directed learner who solicits andimplements feedback to improve outcomes and achieve objectives
Required Experience:
A demonstrated interest in impacting K-12students in urban schools and communities (1-2 years experiencepreferred). Academic expertise in Mathematics, Science, Technology,Engineering, or other related fields. Prior to the start ofemployment, you must have a bachelor’s degree from an accreditedcollege or university. Certification is not required to be hired atUncommon, but you do need to meet NY state certificationeligibility requirements. To meet these requirements, you mustenroll in a teacher preparation program and maintain a GPA of 2.5or higher during your employment with us if you do not have adegree in education. Uncommon Schools teachers are required tobecome certified in the state of New York within a reasonableperiod after beginning employment. Additional Information Ourpeople are what make us Uncommon. Ourcompensation philosophy values equity & fairness and attracting &retaining top talent. Compensation Compensation for this role isbetween $50,000 to $64,700. Starting pay is determined usingvarious factors including but not limited to relevant full-timeteaching experience, education certifications, and tenure withUncommon Schools. Candidates without full-time Teaching experiencewill likely have a starting salary of $50,000.
