High School Math Teacher

Job Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Principal, the High School Math Teacher serves as a content specialist responsible for delivering instruction across a range of math courses such as Algebra, Geometry, Precalculus, Personal Finance, and Dual Enrollment offerings. This position is part of a collaborative 6-12 math department and supports a proficiency-based learning and grading system. Math classes at Northfield Middle High School include students with varied skills and experiences, including those on IEPs and 504 plans. As such, differentiation, inclusion, and relationship-based teaching are core expectations of this role.

Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesPlanning & Preparation-Designs inclusive math lessons that integrate content knowledge with best practices in differentiation, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and proficiency-based instruction

  • Utilizes dataincluding i-Ready diagnostic and instructional datato tailor instruction, plan interventions, and monitor growth
  • Plans coherent units and lessons that accommodate diverse learners, including those with special education plans, multilingual learners, and advanced students
  • Develops instructional goals that are measurable, culturally responsive, and rooted in the Vermont Proficiency-Based Graduation Requirements (PBGRs)
  • Collaborates with colleagues, interventionists, and special educators to develop and support individual learning plans and accommodate learning differences.

Instruction

  • Engages students in meaningful math instruction through multiple representations, student discourse, and inquiry-based practices
  • Promotes active participation, problem solving, and productive struggle in math learning
  • Offers regular formative and summative feedback that supports student reflection, growth, and ownership of learning
  • Integrates social-emotional learning by fostering a safe, supportive classroom where all students feel seen, valued, and respected
  • Provides individual and small group instruction as needed to scaffold and extend learning.

Learning Environment

  • Builds a classroom culture rooted in respect, high expectations, and belief in all students’ potential
  • Implements classroom management strategies that are proactive, restorative, and developmentally appropriate
  • Collaborates with support staff, paraeducators, and colleagues to create a responsive and structured learning environment
  • Organizes classroom space and materials in ways that promote access, independence, and engagement.

Assessment and Feedback

  • Develops and uses rubrics, performance tasks, and authentic assessments aligned with proficiencies
  • Communicates learning targets and success criteria clearly to students
  • Uses assessment dataincluding i-Ready, classroom-based assessments, and student workto inform instruction and document progress
  • Participates in data teams and collaborates with the
EST/MTSS

system to identify and support students needing intervention or enrichment.

Other Professional Responsibilities

  • Collaborates as part of the 612 math department to improve instruction, align curriculum, and analyze student data
  • Maintains accurate and complete records of student progress and performance
  • Communicates regularly with families to build partnerships and ensure shared understanding of student learning and goals
  • Participates in IEP and 504 meetings and provides input for developing appropriate accommodations and goals
  • Engages in regular professional development aligned to district and school improvement goals
  • Demonstrates a commitment to inclusive, anti-bias, and equity-based teaching practices.

QualificationsEducation & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, education, or a related field requiredPrevious experience in secondary education preferred, particularly in Vermont public schools

Certification:
  • Holds or is eligible for a Vermont Teaching License with Mathematics (712) endorsement”
