The primary responsibilities of this position are teaching in-person and online biostatistics courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels, advising biostatistics graduate students, and supporting the department’s educational mission. The Department of Biostatistics has 20 faculty members and over 40 administrative and research staff contributing to a diverse portfolio of interdisciplinary projects and academic programs, and his home of the DATA coordinating and Collaborative Research Unit (DATA CRU, https://www.uab.edu/datacru ) specializing in the design, data management, and statistical analysis of clinical trials and cohort studies. The Department offers four graduate degrees including the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master of Science (MS), both founded in theory and application. The Doctor of Public Health with concentration in Biostatistics, one of only five programs in the US, and Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) with concentration in Biostatistics provide a balance between the application of biostatistics and public health theory and leadership. The department also provides courses supporting SOPH undergraduate and graduate degree programs, interdisciplinary graduate degree programs, and the graduate Certificate in Applied Biostatistics and Epidemiology. Founded in 1978, the

has grown to 84 full-time faculty and 806 students (in the 2023-24 academic year). The

is the only CEPH-accredited public health program in Alabama and both the school (18th) and department (13th) are ranked in the top 20 nationally by U.S. News & World Report . The SOPH is second only to the School of Medicine at UAB for extramural research funding among all 12 schools at UAB. In 2023, the

Required Qualifications Candidates must have a robust background in biostatistics methodology with a strong commitment to teaching and the preparation necessary to teach effectively at the undergraduate and graduate level. A doctoral degree in biostatistics, statistics, or related field is required and a successful track record of teaching and collaboration as part of a multidisciplinary team is strongly preferred. Specific teaching assignments will be based on teaching needs and faculty expertise, and may include courses at the introductory, intermediate, or advanced levels. Individuals with any area of biostatistics expertise are encouraged to apply, and experience in statistical methods, design and analysis of clinical trials, highly computational methods and machine learning, or statistical genetics is a plus. Development of a research portfolio, either as an independent researcher or collaborator, is both permitted and encouraged, and teaching expectations will be modified accordingly.
