Position Summary:

This position involves teaching Literature classes to students in grades 7 and 8. Curriculum emphasizes student choice in literature as well as the application of literary terms to different texts. Candidate should be skilled in assessing students’ reading progress. This position begins August 1, 2025 for the 2025-26 school year.

Specific Duties Include:

Instructing students individually, in small groups, and as a whole class in recognizing literary elements within short stories, novels, and dramas
Supporting student interest in reading a variety of genres (types of fiction and nonfiction) and literary styles of writing (narratives, prose, verse, plays)
Sharing and discussing classic and contemporary middle-grades and young adult literature with students
Collaborates with teachers in all departments to promote the learning and implementation of best practices in literacy instruction
Creating a learning environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity, interests, and learning styles of the students
Having a thorough knowledge of grammar and understanding its importance to the class and to student writing
Managing student behavior in a manner that optimizes the learning environment
Maintaining regular communication with students and their parents regarding progress
Working cooperatively with other grade-level teachers to develop instructional materials that are most appropriate for meeting curricular objectives
Displaying a willingness to follow school and departmental procedures and regulations
Assists in administering assessments and creating and examining data to measure the success of literacy programs and instruction
Other Duties as assigned

Required Skills:

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, demonstrating tact and diplomacy
Competency with basic word processing, spreadsheets, and internet
A solid understanding of learning challenges as well as the accommodations and differentiated learning techniques to support students’ needs
Strong organizational and classroom management skills

Minimum Job Qualifications:

Undergraduate degree in Reading, English, or English Education from an accredited institution of higher learning; master’s degree in English or education preferred
2+ years of successful teaching middle school Language Arts preferred
Reading specialist certification preferred but not required
Independent school experience preferred but not required
The Literature Teacher, Middle School position is a exempt, 10-month position. Salary is commensurate with education and experience.
