The staff counselor(s) provides therapeutic and/or case management support for individuals, and/or families, as aligned with the socio-emotional needs of Summer Pre-College Programs. Typically works under the direct guidance of a counseling professional within a school-based environment. AA/EOE Minimum Qualifications Flexible and adaptable disposition Ability to apply culturally informed mental health counseling methods and techniques. Knowledge of community mental health resources Knowledge of race-based stress Ability to facilitate group therapy interventions & group processing Knowledge of child-based or play therapy techniques. Knowledge of case management. Knowledge and understanding of clinical counseling principles, and case conceptualization beyond DSM terminology Ability to maintain emotional stability to cope with human suffering, emergencies, and other stressors. Knowledge of legal and ethical issues related to working with children; ability to apply crisis intervention as needed. Ability to develop and present educational programs and/or workshops Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, or directly related field; At least 6 months of working with children or in school-based settings which may include internship and/or practicum; Certification/Licensure LA licensure as PLPC, PLMFT, LPC, LMFT, LMSW, LCSW, or equivalent license Special Requirements Summary Work Hours Program hours are 8 AM to 5 PM. PLPCs have an hourly rate of $67 LPCs have an hourly rate of $80 KSA’s Knowledge, Education, Experience, and Proficiencies Master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, or directly related field; At least 6 months of working with children or in school-based settings which may include internship and/or practicum; Certification/Licensure LA licensure as PLPC, PLMFT, LPC, LMFT, LMSW, LCSW, or equivalent license Essential Duties and Responsibilities Essential Duties and Responsibilities Description Provides counseling or therapeutic support to program participants and their families as appropriate to the position; provides therapeutic crisis intervention as required. Gathers relevant clinical information related to program participants’ academic success. Utilizes observational techniques; evaluates observations & clinical information to identify causes of problems and to determine proper therapeutic approach or referral to other specialists. Provides case management and planning support to create individualized action plans to support program participants’ academic success and socio-emotional development. Respond to crisis and/or arrange for therapeutic interventions as appropriate for program and its participants Document interventions & program interactions; Follows up to determine the efficacy of intervention used; makes recommendations regarding modification to action plans. Consult with other therapists and related professional staff, as appropriate, in the performance of therapeutic and/or casework; refer program participants to appropriate service agencies as required. Participates in staff meetings and/or group supervision for the review of clinical issues and program policies and procedures. Participates in, and/or coordinates training sessions and workshops to enhance treatment skills. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
