Summit’s Afterschool Program:

Summit’s Afterschool Program provides a secure, caring environment that extends the academic day while promoting creativity, exploration, and engagement. The program is designed to inspire the whole child, accommodate parents’ needs, and align with Summit School’s values. With a well-structured schedule, children enjoy ample opportunities for hands-on activities, play, movement, and learning. Homework support is available for older students, while all students can explore individual interests in a relaxed, less formal setting. Parents have flexible program options to customize their child’s schedule.

Essential Duties:

The Afterschool Teacher will play a vital role in supervising students participating in Summit School’s Afterschool Program, which serves children aged 3 through 5th grade. Effective classroom management and lesson planning are crucial. The teacher will actively engage and interact with students, fostering a dynamic and nurturing environment. Based on work hours, responsibilities may include developing and delivering thematic lessons from Monday through Thursday for small student groups. The teacher will also work with staff children during Summit’s Conference Days, Professional Development Days, and at the start and end of school workweeks. Professional development participation and adaptability in managing changing and challenging scenarios are key expectations. Collaboration and clear communication with fellow Afterschool teachers and the Director are fundamental to this role.

Responsibilities:

Supervise and ensure the safety of children. Report significant incidents or concerns to the Afterschool Director. Engage with students, fostering an interactive and enjoyable environment. Plan and deliver engaging activity lessons (based on assigned hours). Facilitate indoor and outdoor play activities. Support progressive education principles in daily activities. Assist students during homework time. Serve snacks, read stories, and lead games. Collaborate with staff on Professional Development Days, during opening/closing workweeks, and on conference days.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree; coursework in education, child development, or related fields preferred.

Experience:

Prior experience working with children in an educational, recreational, or childcare setting is highly desirable.

Skills:

Orientation to Progressive philosophy and teaching methods. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to manage and engage groups of children effectively. Creativity in planning activities and lessons that inspire and entertain students. Flexibility and adaptability in dynamic or unexpected situations. Collaboration skills to work effectively with a team.

Certifications:

CPR and First Aid certification preferred or willingness to obtain upon hire.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to perform active duties, including walking, bending, and running as necessary. Capacity to lift or move light equipment.
