Qualifications/ Requirements:

Applicants must hold or be eligible to hold a North Carolina teaching license in General Family and Consumer Sciences Education or Applicants must hold or be eligible to hold a Bachelor’s degree in a related field with two years industry-related work experience within the past five years.

Goal:

To develop in each pupil an awareness of the importance of a good home environment as a basis for satisfactory home and family living; to motivate each pupil to acquire competencies, knowledge, and skills relating to child development, clothing and textiles, family and community relations, food sciences, nutrition, safety, interior design and decorating, and household equipment; and to discover and develop special talents of pupils in Family and Consumer Science fields who may be interested in Family and Consumer Science related careers.

Duties:

Teach concepts and skills in foods and nutrition, fashion and textiles, early childhood development, family relationships, and/or counseling/mental health to secondary students, using the course of study adopted by the Board of Education and the state CTE Essential Standards adopted by the State Board of Education to plan appropriate instructional activities
Instruct pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district
Organize class activities so that preparation, instruction or laboratory work, and clean-up activities can be accomplished within the allotted class time
Demonstrate skill techniques in home economics and prepare appropriate instructional aids and display materials to enhance learning
Provide individualized and small-group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil
Instruct pupils in use, care, and safe operation of household equipment and appliances
Make minor adjustments and request repairs to equipment as required
Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment in the laboratory-type classroom
Evaluate each pupil’s progress in concepts and skills of subject taught and contribution to a group, project, or goal
Select and requisition books, instructional aids, and equipment; maintain required inventory records; purchase groceries and other supplies as authorized
Encourage pupils to demonstrate learned techniques at home with their families
Communicate with parents and school counselors on pupil progress
Identify pupil needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems
Supervise pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day
Partner with other FACS teachers to provide FCCLA, the program area Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO)
Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs
Participate in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities
Maintain current vocational information for pupils interested in professional careers and resource materials for those who plan to be homemakers
Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district, and in self-selected professional growth activities
Must be able to perform heavy work exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of forces frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to lift objects
