Job Description UncommonMiddle School Science teachers work in grade-level teams to prepareall students with the tools and knowledge to critically engage inthe field of science. At the heart of all Science courses is a lovefor the subject and inquiry-based learning, including a robustfocus on student discourse and the science practices. Scienceteachers employ a variety of instructional strategies to develop apassion for scientific questioning and analysis in their students.
Our teachers strive for subject mastery and have a keen sense ofthe socio-emotional changes middle schoolers experience. At theconclusion of eighth grade, students are prepared for the academicautonomy and college preparatory focus of our high schools.
Responsibilities 1. Instruction
- You’ll teach aninterdisciplinary, NGSS-aligned curriculum that includes analysisof key areas including but not limited to: Climate and Earth’ssystems, the cosmos, matter and energy transformations, electricityand magnetism, and molecular and ecological systems.
- You’lldevelop students’ practices of questioning, modeling, constructingexplanations, data analysis, argumentation, and planning andconducting interactive labs.
- You’ll use your love of science tofoster confidence and meaningful engagement with the subject forstudents.
- You’ll cultivate an awareness of the interconnectednature of fields of science (e.g., ecosystems, climate change, andlunar phases) and our local and global community. 2. Data Analysis
- You’ll meet weekly with your principal and/or instructional coachto analyze and respond to trends in student work samples andassessments.
- You’ll learn and implement strategies todifferentiate instruction for all learners in your classroom. 3.School Culture
- You’ll build positive relationships with studentsto ensure they feel seen, loved, and heard.
- You’ll partner withstudents’ families to ensure appropriate resources are available tosupport their child’s learning needs.
- You’ll engage inpractice-based professional development, mentorship, and coachingsessions.
- You’ll participate in weekly, school-wide meetings tocultivate community, model our core values, and encourage studentachievement.
- You’ll partner with your grade level team to developacademic goals and practice instructional strategies.
Qualifications
- A demonstrated commitment to supporting students’social emotional and academic development
- An enthusiasm forcollaborating with internal and external partners in the bestinterest of students
- A self-directed learner who solicits andimplements feedback to improve outcomes and achieve objectives

Required Experience:
- A demonstrated interest in impacting K-12students in urban schools and communities (1-2 years experiencepreferred).
- Academic expertise in Science, Technology,Engineering, Mathematics, or other related fields of study.
- Priorto the start of employment, you must have a bachelor’s degree froman accredited college or university.
Teacher certification is not aprerequisite for consideration at Uncommon Schools in the state ofNJ, but you do need to meet NJ state certification eligibilityrequirements (a final undergraduate or graduate cumulative GPA of3.0 for graduates on or after 9/1/16, or 2.75 if you graduatedprior to 9/1/16). All instructional staff are required to becomecertified in the state of New Jersey within a reasonable periodafter beginning employment. Additional Information Our people arewhat make us Uncommon. Our compensationphilosophy values equity & fairness and attracting & retaining toptalent. Compensation Compensation for this role is between $56,000to $80,000. Starting pay is determined using various factorsincluding but not limited to relevant full-time teachingexperience, education certifications, and tenure with UncommonSchools. Candidates without full-time Teaching experience willlikely have a starting salary of $56,000. Benefits
