Job Description UncommonMiddle School English Language Arts (ELA) teachers are passionateabout literature and building an engaging classroom culture. Ourteachers develop subject mastery and have a keen sense of thesocio-emotional changes middle schoolers experience. At the heartof all ELA classes is an emphasis on writing and discourse designedto give students the tools to be confident in the power of theirown voice. Teachers are trained in a variety of research-basedinstructional strategies to prioritize discussion, ignite a passionfor literature, build reading comprehension, and promote agency. Bythe conclusion of eighth grade, students are prepared for theacademic autonomy and college preparatory focus of our highschools. Responsibilities 1. Instruction You’ll empower students tobe their fullest selves by teaching an inclusive, culturallyresponsive curriculum that seeks equitable outcomes for allstudents. You’ll guide students to analyze literary andnon-narrative texts, assess an author’s purpose, write in a varietyof genres, and grapple with meaningful questions in student-leddiscourse. You’ll create an inclusive and safe environment, allyingwith students to speak and write in their authentic voice. You’llguide students to choose books of interest independently, as theydevelop their own passions and interests as readers. 2. DataAnalysis You’ll meet weekly with your principal and/orinstructional coach to analyze and respond to trends in studentwork samples and assessments. You’ll learn and implement strategiesto differentiate instruction for all learners in your classroom. 3.School Culture You’ll build positive relationships with students toensure they feel seen, loved, and heard. You’ll partner withstudents’ families to ensure appropriate resources are available tosupport their child’s learning needs. You’ll engage inpractice-based professional development, mentorship, and coachingsessions. You’ll participate in weekly, school-wide meetings tocultivate community, model our core values, and encourage studentachievement. You’ll partner with your grade level team to developacademic goals and practice instructional strategies.
Qualifications A demonstrated commitment to supporting students’social emotional and academic development An enthusiasm forcollaborating with internal and external partners in the bestinterest of students A self-directed learner who solicits andimplements feedback to improve outcomes and achieve objectives
Required Experience:
A demonstrated interest in impacting K-12students in urban schools and communities (1-2 years experiencepreferred). Academic expertise in Humanities, English, SocialSciences, or other related fields of study. Prior to the start ofemployment, you must have a bachelor’s degree from an accreditedcollege or university. Teacher certification is not a prerequisitefor consideration at Uncommon Schools in the state of NJ, but youdo need to meet NJ state certification eligibility requirements (afinal undergraduate or graduate cumulative GPA of 3.0 for graduateson or after 9/1/16, or 2.75 if you graduated prior to 9/1/16). Allinstructional staff are required to become certified in the stateof New Jersey within a reasonable period after beginningemployment. Additional Information Our people are what make usUncommon. Compensation Compensation for this role is between $56,000 to$80,000. Starting pay is determined using various factors includingbut not limited to relevant full-time teaching experience,education certifications, and tenure with Uncommon Schools.
Candidates without full-time Teaching experience will likely have astarting salary of $56,000.
