Job Description UncommonMiddle School History teachers work in grade level teams anddepartments to push students towards being self-guided learners.

Our teachers develop subject mastery and have a keen sense of thesocio-emotional changes middle school students experience. Historyclasses aim to empower students’ voices and develop them intoglobal citizens by emphasizing textual analysis, analyticalwriting, and discourse. Teachers also use engaging instructionalstrategies to make history come alive! At the conclusion of eighthgrade, students are prepared for the academic autonomy and collegepreparatory focus of our high schools. Responsibilities 1.Instruction

  • You’ll facilitate student-led discourse of historicaltopics, where students grapple with open-ended guiding questions,engage in peer-to-peer debate, and synthesize arguments.
  • You’llguide students to understand the author’s claim and the power ofsourcing while developing the skills of argumentation,corroboration, inquiry, and historiography through primary andsecondary source analysis.
  • You’ll teach an in-house curriculumthat prioritizes the diverse histories of Indigenous peoples,African Americans, women, ancient cultures, and the impact all ofthese groups have had on the development of the United States.
  • You’ll build an inclusive and safe environment where students areempowered to use their voices to express evidence-based opinionsand perspectives. 2. Data Analysis
  • You’ll meet weekly with yourprincipal and/or instructional coach to analyze and respond totrends in student work samples and assessments.
  • You’ll learn andimplement strategies to differentiate instruction for all learnersin your classroom. 3. School Culture
  • You’ll build positiverelationships with students to ensure they feel seen, loved, andheard.
  • You’ll partner with students’ families to ensureappropriate resources are available to support their child’slearning needs.
  • You’ll engage in practice-based professionaldevelopment, mentorship, and coaching sessions.
  • You’llparticipate in weekly, school-wide meetings to cultivate community,model our core values, and encourage student achievement.
  • You’llpartner with your grade level team to develop academic goals andpractice instructional strategies. Qualifications
  • A demonstratedcommitment to supporting students’ social emotional and academicdevelopment
  • An enthusiasm for collaborating with internal andexternal partners in the best interest of students
  • Aself-directed learner who solicits and implements feedback toimprove outcomes and achieve objectives
  • Required Experience:
  • Ademonstrated interest in impacting K-12 students in urban schoolsand communities (1-2 years experience preferred).
  • Academicexpertise in Education, History, Geography, Political Science,Criminal Justice, Social Sciences, or the Humanities.
  • Prior tothe start of employment, you must have a bachelor’s degree from anaccredited college or university.

Certification is not required tobe hired at Uncommon, but you do need to meet NY statecertification eligibility requirements. To meet these requirements,you must enroll in a teacher preparation program and maintain a GPAof 2.5 or higher during your employment with us if you do not havea degree in education. Uncommon Schools teachers are required tobecome certified in the state of New York within a reasonableperiod after beginning employment. Additional Information Ourpeople are what make us Uncommon. Ourcompensation philosophy values equity & fairness and attracting &retaining top talent. Compensation Compensation for this role isbetween $50,000 to $64,700. Starting pay is determined usingvarious factors including but not limited to relevant full-timeteaching experience, education certifications, and tenure withUncommon Schools. Candidates without full-time Teaching experiencewill likely have a starting salary of $50,000. Benefits
