Camp SUMMARY:

The STEM Educator Ill – Afterschool is responsible for assisting with the delivery of engaging, hands-on science and educational programming at the Museum of Discovery and Science specifically for the afterschool program with the Boys and Girls Club. Will interact with children in the 3rd – 5th grade, helping to foster curiosity, creativity, and a passion for discovery through interactive activities, experiments and projects. The role involves planning and preparing these programs. Will also engage with students through exhibit interpretation while on the museum floor.

QUALIFICATIONS

A college degree or pursuing a college degree with 4 years’ experience in a museum or educational setting and previous customer service experience. Know-how in teaching young people grade 3rd – 5th. Strong classroom management skills and ability to lead a group of students. Proficiency In lesson planning and curriculum development. Aptitude in science, technology, art, engineering, green design and curiosity and a continued commitment to developing such skills. Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to speak before large audiences. Detail oriented, punctual, and dependable. Ability to take initiative, work and troubleshoot in a fast-paced work environment with attention to safety techniques. Have the ability to work under pressure in constantly changing conditions. Must be able to stand for long periods of time and be able to lift 25 pounds. Must be available to work Monday-Friday, 1:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. during the school year (August through June).

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Supervise and manage a classroom of 20 students at a time. 2. Responsible for preparation, set up and breakdown of all educational programming for the afterschool program. 3. Maintain and oversee list of supplies. 4. Plan and prototype STEM based activities, experiments and projects for the afterschool program with the Boys and Girls Club. 5. Organize project-based and long-term projects for students to showcase in 2 culminating Exhibit Nights during the school year. 6. Engage with children grades 3rd – 5th, facilitating and delivering hands-on science and educational programming. 7. Interpret exhibits and engage students in exhibit space during museum time. 8. Attend field trips with the Boys and Girls Club Afterschool Program as needed. 9. Activate educator previews, donor walk-throughs, and other education showcases related to the afterschool program as needed. 10. Work closely with Boys and Girls Club staff during the afterschool program. 11. Undergo both MODS and Boys and Girls Club training and professional development. 12. Maintain standards of interdepartmental communication. 13. Perform other duties as assigned and qualified

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This job operates in a fast-paced, non-formal educational museum setting. Must be able to perform the following physical behaviors repetitively throughout a shift: standing, walking, handling, reaching horizontally, grasping firmly, reaching above the shoulder, reaching below the waist, pushing buttons, bending, twisting, stooping, squatting, crouching, kneeling, and pushing. You must be able to lift and carry up to 25 lbs. outdoors in extreme temperatures. This is a part-time, hourly -Friday, 1:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. during the school year (August through June).

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

College degree or pursuing a college degree with 4 years’ experience in a museum or educational setting and previous customer service experience.

ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATIONS

Must have a valid driver’s license.
