Archivist Description:
The Wayside Inn Foundation (TWIF) seeks to hire a part-time, on-site (not remote) Archivist at its offices in Sudbury, MA. The core responsibilities of this position are all aspects of archives, collections, and exhibit management, preservation, display, and interpretation, as well as historic building and room experiences. Position will also contribute toanization’s programs, bi-annual newsletter and other visitor/membershipmunications. Job Responsibilities:
- Collections accessioning (through gift or purchase), conservation and maintenance, disposition, deaccessioning, and loans, and managing related policies
- Collections management: processing,anizing, and preserving collections; and maintaining appropriate records and databases, both analog and digital, including PastPerfect
- Creating and managing permanent and temporary exhibitions (history rooms, display cabinets, museum gallery, Grist Mill, Redstone Schoolhouse, etc.) including all signage (collections, exhibits, displays, etc.)
- Tracking collection activities, such as loans, conservation work, storage, and publication requests
- Working with potential donors of materials to collections
- Serve as liaison with othermunity, history and preservation-based partners for collection matters
- Manage Archives and Research Center and promote and enable access for researchers, scholars, and visitors
- Assisting researchers, public, and staff with inquiries regarding TWIF history and collections access
- Recruiting and managing volunteers and interns for collections related projects
- Identifying grants and submitting proposals for archival and collections related support
- Giving history talks or guiding tours as needed
- Organizing and ensuring protection of all collections in the Archives & Research Center, Chapel Archives, and other display and storage locations
- Working to reinterpret the historic rooms, displays, and historic structures at The Wayside Inn Historic Site for better story-telling, historical appropriateness, and visitor education
- Supporting site wayfinding, descriptive signage, and other ways to increase visitor engagement and experience
- Supporting educational and cultural programming initiatives drawing on the history and collections at The Wayside Inn
- Working closely with the Advancement Director, Innkeeper/GM, Board (throughmittees) and other staff to increase guest/visitor/donor/member engagement and experience
Qualifications:
College degree in history, arts, education, museum studies, social sciences, or a related field, as well as proven experience in archives and collections management. Candidates must be enthusiastic and knowledgeable about TWIF’s history and mission, motivated and able to work independently, and be positive, creative, team-oriented and resourceful and serve as a strong ambassador for TWIF with customers, visitors, partners, and themunity, with a goal to increase and improvemunity and visitor educational and cultural opportunities and experiences through theanization’s collections. Must maintain and elevate professionalism in all Archives activities. Superioranizational skills required. Must be tech savvy and work with existing platforms (Past Perfect, Constant , MicroSoft 365, etc.) as well as publishing/ design software (Adobe Indesign, Microsoft Publisher, etc.). Must enjoy a visitor/guest experience role and serve as strong ambassador for TWIF’s history and mission. Must have excellent written and verbal andmunication skills. Must have strong understanding of collections management and archival best practices, as outlined by the Society of American Archivists (SAA) and ensure adnce to SAA standards for preservation, description, and access, ensuring the proper care, handling, loan, and long-term storage of historical materials in both physical and digital formats.
