Primary Purpose of Position:
The Objects Conservator position is part of the Collection Section at the North Carolina Museum of History and answers to the Collections Manager. The primary responsibilities are to conserve and preserve the NC Museum of History objects collection by examining and assessing artifacts required for exhibits and pending loans and participates with the Collections Section in general to promote the general health of the artifact collection. Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Collaborate with the Senior Objects Conservator and Textiles Conservator(s) on mutual projects
Supervise temporary conservation assistants, interns, and volunteers
Write treatment proposals, treat artifacts, complete treatment synopsis, and other reports and enter this documentation, including images, into the computerized artifact database.
Act as lead or advisor for contracts with outside conservators in private practice as required. Conduct conservation surveys of gallery light levels; monitors building climate and pest intrusion, and spot checks security of museum exhibit displays. Develop guidelines of levels of artifact care and encourages implementation of such guidelines
Promote safety in the lab spaces
Work collaboratively within the Collections Section, on exhibit teams, and within the larger museum staff environment. Communicate effectively with patrons and staff
Position/Physical Requirements:
Must be able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 35 lbs. with or without accommodation.
Ability to work up to 6 feet on a ladder.
Must have a valid driver’s license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
Must be able to work Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 5:00pm.
Must have the flexibility to occasionally work evenings and weekends and occasionally make overnight trips.

Supplemental and Contact Information Section/Unit Description:
The Collections Section of the North Carolina Museum of History is responsible for the intellectual and physical management of approximately 150,000 historical objects and fine arts. This stewardship includes negotiating with donors and lenders, issuing legal contracts transferring title of ownership from donors to the state, processing and cataloging incoming collections, maintaining up-to-date inventories, performing conservation and preventative measures as needed, creating proper storage and exhibit conditions, and packing and transporting objects for the Museum of History and its regional museums. The Collections range in size and materials from a bead to a building, from crystal to cast iron.
Division Description:
The Division of State History Museums collects and preserves artifacts and other historical materials relating to the history and heritage of North Carolina in a local, regional, national, and international context to assist people in understanding how the past influences the present. The division interprets history through exhibitions, educational programs, and publications available to the visitor on-site or through distance-learning technologies.
