Primary Purpose of Position:
The State Archives of North Carolina, a role that includes the management of the permanent collections in the division and its satellite offices, as well as the statewide records management program for all public records. As administrator of the program, the employee oversees 71 employees in offices located in Raleigh, Manteo, New Bern, and Asheville. The State Archivist and Records Administrator provides leadership, vision, and strategic direction for the division; establishes standards and priorities for the division; oversees the scheduling of state and local government records; collaborates with agency administration on legal issues related to public records including replevin efforts; oversees all public services for the division; promotes the work of the division in a variety of mediums; manages all grant, appropriated, and receipts based funds for the division, including oversight and strategic use of the Archives and Records Management (ARM) funds based on departmental priorities; serves as deputy coordinator for the State Historical Records Advisory Board (SHRAB); collaborates with the Friends of the Archives, a support group for the division, including serving on the board; engages key stakeholders within the department, state and local government and appropriate national government and non-profit groups to further the mission and goals of the division; and partners with professional organizations statewide and nationally to promote best practices and standards for the management of government records. Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Direct and manage all programs and operations of the State Archives of North Carolina, including all records facilities and satellite offices. Establish and carry out division strategic plans and sets long-term vision for the State Archives and its programs in a context of a rapidly changing environment of electronic records and digital media. Ensure that all programs of the division adhere to professional standards as well as state and federal statutes including those related to concepts of fair use, intellectual property rights, copyright law, and state and public records laws. Lead planning and implementation of division budget and grants, as well as oversee management of fiscal resources of the division. Develop strategic budget expansion requests based on agency priorities. Represent division on state, regional, and national archival and records management bodies as well as actively build partnerships with state and local officials and other groups instrumental in the development of a robust archives and records management program. Serve as deputy coordinator of the State Historical Records Advisory Board and oversees administration of board grants. Represents the Archives statewide and nationally to showcase compelling collection items for engaging tours, programs, and outreach.
Position/Physical Requirements:
Typical work schedule: Monday -Friday; 8:00AM-5:00PM with occasional overnight travel and weekend responsibilities. •

As mandated by N.C.G.S. 121 and 132, the State Archives of North Carolina is responsible for the promotion, preservation, and administration of public records and other private records deemed to have sufficient value to merit archival preservation. This is done by scheduling, managing, and collecting the records of state and local governments, and providing technical assistance to all agencies on the management of their records. The division also collects and maintains private papers which document the history of the state. The State Archives maintains over 100 million items held in the Archives, the State Records Center, and two annexes housing inactive public records. It also maintains a digital repository for born digital and digitized collections. The division also operates the regional special collections including the Western Regional Archives in Asheville and the Outer Banks History Center in Manteo.
