Under the direction of the Cultural History Interpretation Coordinator the aide will assist with hiring, training, scheduling, evaluating, and supervising the cultural history interpretation aides at MPHS. The LHIA will assist with the development and maintenance of partnerships and community engagement, cultural resource stewardship projects, and perform other duties as assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Assist with hiring and training new interpretive aides. Schedule, assign work responsibilities, and assist with supervising interpretive aides. Schedule, plan, develop, create and maintain records of, and deliver programs to include daily walking tours, public history and arts programs, and custom tours for groups. Assist with developing and delivering ongoing interpretation training and training materials, and planning and scheduling staff meetings. Perform sound research to produce reliable and insightful content for interpretive programs, training, and products. Develop procedures, conduct and supervise housekeeping tasks, procure supplies and equipment to help maintain optimal working environment. Organize and maintain staff library, office and electronic files. Purchase, inventory, and maintain interpretive supplies and equipment. Assist with planning, developing, and providing high quality visitor experiences in the MPHS welcome center and on the grounds. Assist with community engagement and marketing, including social media. Work cooperatively with Lead History Volunteer Aide. Collaborate with the Education Coordinator in the development and delivery of curriculum based social studies programs. Assist with cultural resource stewardship project planning, development, and implementation. Most programs take place in an outdoor setting and the ideal applicant will be comfortable in a variety of environments and weather conditions. The individual in this position will be expected to converse effectively and efficiently with a wide variety of people. Assist in securing and executing grants.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

A general knowledge of the history and cultural resources of the Charleston County area and South Carolina including African American history and Gullah/Geechee culture A general knowledge of research techniques and ability to work with museums, archives, and others to access primary sources of accurate information. Ability to verbally communicate well with others. Ability to confidently and empathetically discuss in a public setting issues related to slavery and its ongoing legacy of racism. Ability to effectively engage in culturally and racially sensitive communication with public and employees. Ability to read and interpret body language of others. Ability to actively listen. Ability to consider and present a variety of human perspectives. Ability to develop and deliver thematic cultural history interpretation. Ability to implement appropriate group management techniques in indoor and outdoor settings. Ability to follow instructions in an organized manner and complete assigned tasks to the satisfaction of the direct supervisor. Ability to present clear, concise, and comprehensive written and oral reports. Ability to manage time effectively, establish and reflect good work habits, and the ability to work independently as well as with a team. Ability to accomplish tasks that require physical labor. Ability to present oneself as a professional in the field of interpretation and conform to the CCPRC uniform requirements. General computer skills including competence with Microsoft Office suite. Ability to obtain and maintain certification in First Aid, CPR, and Bloodborne pathogen procedures. Perform other related duties as required.

Training and Experience:

A bachelor’s degree, or equivalent work experience, including two years’ experience in at least one of the following areas is preferred: cultural history interpretation, teaching, museums, education, or similar field. A high school diploma is required.

Working Conditions and Physical Abilities:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and move about; use hand and fingers to handle and feel; reach and pull with torso, hands and arms; talk and listen. The employee frequently is required to walk and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is required to sit, climb or balance, and taste and smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock. The employee is regularly exposed to extreme heat, humidity, rain cold, wind, and sunlight. The employee is regularly exposed to poisonous or venomous flora and fauna. The noise level in the work environment is variable. Due to the classification of this position, it is required to participate in the South Carolina Retirement System (SCRS) State Retirement Plan.
