As the storytellers of South Carolina, the South Carolina State Museum (SCSM) staff share the rich natural history and cultural diversity, innovative spirit, and artistic creativity of the state through the museum’s permanent collections, educational programs, exhibitions and digital resources. The South Carolina State Museum seeks a detail-oriented individual to assist the Director of Collections Management in documentation of the permanent and loan collections through paperwork, research, database entry and copyright research. Reporting to the Director of Collections Management, the Assistant Registrar will work closely to ensure paperwork is updated in a timely manner, respond to internal and external inquiries related to the collection, ensure compliance with federal, state, and copyright law, and act as a point person for object movement on smaller exhibitions and displays. This position will also play a role in the daily collections management tasks of the museum such as exhibit installs, object movement, and cleaning. The Collections Management Department works closely with the Department of Curatorial Affairs and the Department of Education and Engagement as part of the Office of Engagement and Content. This is an exciting moment for the State Museum as it embarks on a $75 million dollar Capital Campaign to revolutionize the museum experience for our visitors and expand our educational impact state-wide. This collaborative project will allow the museum to share more of its extensive collection of over 1.1 million objects and specimens and renew over 150,000 square feet of with updated permanent exhibitions and immersive multimedia experiences highlighting the important stories of people and communities throughout South Carolina’s history. Through these new spaces and engaging explorations of objects, the museum will offer our guests the opportunity to connect with each other and the many communities that call our state home.

Responsibilities and Duties:

Assist the Dir. Of Coll. Management in preparing paperwork for deeds of gift, transfers, and loans, completing data entry and ensuring documentation is completeFinalize loans and ensure timely renewal of paperworkActs as point person for object movement in smaller exhibits and displays, tracking location changes and ensuring object safety during installation and deinstallationAssists with general collections management tasks such as couriering of objects, cleaning of museum, and with museum installation and deinstallation of exhibits, tracking location changesResearch copyright of collection and assist with fulfilling image rights requests; coordinate with Collections Photographer to fulfill specific needsAssist the Director of Collections Management in implementing policies related to the registration of the collectionWorks across disciplines in a team atmosphere to achieve the museum’s strategic goals.

All other duties as assigned.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Minimum Qualifications:

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in History, Art, museum studies, or related field.

Minimum 2 years’ experience in working with museum collections, with focus on records management, object handling, and cataloguingClose attention to detail, especially in written communication, and strong organizational skillsAbility to assess and prioritize work to meet deadlines with minimal supervisionDemonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environmentExperience working with a collections management system; Axiell’s Emu a plus

Work Environment and Essential Functions:

Have a valid driver’s license and be willing to drive vans and box trucks.

Ability to lift 30 lbs and climb on ladders, lifts, and scaffolding with cleaning equipmentAbility to handle collections safely and securely, including manual dexterity and ability to operate pallet jacks and other low-impact equipment for moving objectsComfortable working in tight, dusty, and dirty spaces, and with potentially hazardous materials such as taxidermy, weapons, and historic chemicals using provided PPE and trainingComfortable communicating with lenders, donors, and the public about the functions of collections managementExperience working with a collections management system; Axiell’s Emu a plus
