Position Summary Information Position Summary The Department of Art + Design at Austin Peay State University is seeking applications for a Studio Technician to join our vibrant department. The APSU Department of Art + Design is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design and offers BFA and BA degrees with concentrations in Studio Art, Animation and Visual Effects, Graphic Design, Art History, and Art Education. The department consists of eightneen full-time faculty, three full-time staff, and twelve part-time instructors who celebrate the mission of teaching and innovation in serving 350+ undergraduate majors. We aspire to provide an accepting environment that empowers students to ask questions, think critically, take risks, and develop intellectual and creative curiosity. The Studio Technician is a full-time, 12 month position that supports the students, faculty, and staff who utilize the facilities and equipment in the Department of Art + Design, specifically in the areas of Ceramics, Sculpture, and student galleries. This position also includes the development and maintenance of other studios, galleries, classrooms within the facilities on a project-basis. The Studio Technician is the primary contact for Health and Safety in the department. This position reports directly to the Department Chair. Austin Peay State University is a four-year public, doctoral-level university, with six colleges and four Chairs of Excellence. The University has an enrollment of over 10,000 students and is located in Clarksville, Tennessee, a community of an estimated 180,000 people located approximately 40 miles northwest of Nashville, TN. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Contribute to a culture of student success in the Department of Art + Design.
Oversee the day-to-day operations and maintenance of the Ceramics and Sculpture area facilities, ensuring that all equipment operates effectively and safely, facilities are clean and efficient, supplies are stocked and available, equipment and work are stored properly, and major obstructions are removed from around machinery and work areas.
Assist in the instructors in the Ceramics and Sculpture areas during day classes as needed to complete tasks and help facilitate class activities such as loading and unloading kilns, providing technical and safety help, and assisting students with fabrication and use of tools under the guidance of the instructor.
Assist faculty and staff in the maintenance of the Art + Design facilities; on an annual basis supervising the refurbishment of the undergraduate studios.
Maintain Health and Safety communication and standards for the department including the MSDS binders, First Aid kits, and coordination with campus offices for proper disposal of toxic and inert waste materials generated by the department.
Conduct mandatory shop safety training for all students who utilize the facilities and for faculty and staff as needed. Providing technical assistance to students, faculty, and staff who are unfamiliar with the equipment or procedures in the Ceramics and Sculpture Studios or Art + Design Makerspace.
Assist faculty in preparation of current inventory of supplies and management of materials, equipment, and student monitors in Sculpture and Ceramics and other areas as needs arise.
Ensure, in coordination with faculty, that adequate funds are available to maintain or replace equipment, tools, and supplies.
Oversee the purchasing of supplies, equipment and services as needed.
Repair defective hand and power tools and servicing machinery and equipment. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to efficiently operate a personal computer and associated software (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc)

Able to use hands to manipulate equipment Required Minimum Qualifications Bachelor of Fine or Studio Arts.
Experience working in a shop environment.
Advanced Ceramics or Sculpture knowledge preferred.
Ability to work effectively with a wide range of students and faculty in use of the equipment and application of processes and techniques in support of creative goals.
