Full Job Description General Summary of Duties:

The Director, National Competition holds an Executive-level leadership position within YoungArts. The Director, National Competition oversees the operations of the National Competition, including leading overall visioning, development, and management of National Competition applications processes, adjudications, National YoungArts Week, and Winner Labs, all efforts that serve artists ages 15-18. In overseeing the National Competition, the Director leads a team to maintain the highest possible administrative and program delivery/execution standards for the organization. The team includes the Associate Directors, National Competition; Senior Manager, Outreach and Community Development; and Coordinator, National Competition. This position is responsible for implementation of strategic objectives and organizational initiatives as collaboratively developed with YoungArts CEO and Senior Director, Lifetime Support for Artists. The Director, National Competition provides leadership for the Artistic Programs team alongside the Senior Director, Lifetime Support for Artists, as well as contributes to building a rich community of cultural partners, award winners, and guest artists.

Direct Reporting:

The Director, National Competition is the supervisor of two Associate Directors, Senior Manager, and Coordinator, National Competition. The Director, National Competition provides prioritization guidance, task delegation, and support for skill development. Essential and Other Responsibilities (perform other duties as assigned): Develop strategy for internal operational excellence, including the creation of cross-departmental collaboration and programmatic project management infrastructures that will support organizational growth. Maintain the highest standards of production possible for public-facing programs and events, ensuring that programmatic delivery is seamless and effective throughout the year. Collaborate with Executive leadership to ensure the National Competition’s continuous improvement (and alignment with YoungArts’ strategic plan and growth vision) through effective design, experimentation, execution, and evaluation practices. Provide exceptional team management and mentorship, including setting and tracking team member KPIs to support the organizational strategic plan and help facilitate team members individualized professional development. Collaborate cross departmentally to support storytelling, fundraising, and operational goals; ensure programs leadership team is gathering requisite information for all reporting needs. Contribute to the annual program budgeting process and support monthly expense tracking and reconciliation within the National Competition suite of programs. Recognize innovative ways that YoungArts can expand and adapt its programming, ensuring that cutting edge approaches are utilized for greater reach and impact. Develop and steward relationships with award winners, artists, and cultural organizations to support programmatic growth. Represent YoungArts in national convenings and contribute thought leadership to the field. Collaborate with Senior Director, Integrated Advancement to develop evaluation strategies to assess program effectiveness and data management. Work with the rest of the programs team to cultivate an environment of continuous learning and adaptivity.

Qualifications and Experience Requirements:

Evidence of knowledge across arts practices, with preference for expertise in one or more disciplines of the performing, visual, and/or literary arts. Experience creating systems of evaluation and review. Experience in leading multidisciplinary curriculum development. Experience working with and/or supporting artists early in their development. A preference for experience working with artists ages 15 – 18. Evidence of strong leadership skills, including decisiveness, emotional intelligence, prioritization, negotiation, and equanimity in a fast-paced environment. Outstanding oral and written communication skills. Experience with budget development and management. Flexibility to work outside of regular office hours for programs and events. Education and/or

Credentialing Requirements:

Master’s degree or the equivalent in education and experience 7+ years of progressive experience managing high-performing teams and evidence of responsibility growth in the arts and culture field Experience beyond requirement will be considered in lieu of education requirement Working conditions, typical physical/mental demands: YoungArts physical campus and headquarters are in Miami, FL. Work is performed in a hybrid (virtual and in-office) setting. Typical operations take place in an office environment and/or in an event/venue setting. General working hours are 9:00 am-5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. The nature of our work will sometimes require an adjustment to this schedule, including evenings and weekends. You will normally be advised in advance should your work schedule be adjusted. Travel will be required.
