The Metropolitan Waterworks Museum is a distinctive industrial history museum with a focus on steam pumping engines and the Boston water system, nestled in a historic building that reflects our rich heritage.

Position Summary:

We are seeking an inspiring and dynamic Executive Director to lead Metropolitan Waterworks Museum into its next chapter. The Executive Director will be the public face of the museum and is responsible for the strategic and operational oversight of the museum. This includes fostering community relationships, enhancing visitor experience, driving fundraising efforts, and ensuring the effective management and support of our dedicated staff. Continued development of the Museum’s brand and messaging is of vital importance.

Key Responsibilities Management and Operations:

Oversee daily operations to ensure excellence in visitor experience, facilities management, and program delivery. Direct the effective management and development of museum staff, fostering a positive work culture of empathy and respect. Work closely with the Board of Directors to identify new opportunities and areas for growth.

Fundraising and Financial Management:

Develop and implement fundraising strategies to secure financial support from individuals, corporations, foundations, and government entities.

Leadership and Vision:

Work with the Board of Directors to provide visionary leadership and direction to the museum, ensuring alignment with the mission and strategic goals. Serve as a role model of leadership and foster a collaborative, inclusive, and respectful working environment. Oversee the preparation and management of the annual budget, ensuring financial sustainability and stewardship.

Community Engagement:

Act as the primary spokesperson for the museum, building and maintaining strong relationships with the local community, stakeholders, and the media. Promote the museum’s visibility and reputation as a center for industrial history and culture.

Communication and Collaboration:

Maintain open, candid and productive communication with staff, stakeholders, and the Board of Directors. Collaborate with community organizations, educational institutions, and partners to enhance programmatic offerings and outreach.

Qualifications and Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree in Museum Studies, History, Nonprofit Management or a related field. A Master’s degree is preferred. Minimum of five years’ experience in a leadership role within a museum or nonprofit institution. Demonstrated success in fund raising, including major gifts, grants and sponsorship. Proven leadership and management skills with a track record of team development and support. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and inspire a wide range of audiences. Strong financial management and strategic planning experience. Deep appreciation for history. Experience working with nonprofit boards and volunteer networks. Other duties as required.
