We are interested in candidates who possess a passion for teaching students in grades five through twelve, a firm understanding of music techniques and instruction, and a commitment to using varied and dynamic teaching methods. The candidate should also be willing to contribute to student life at Altamont by playing a leadership role beyond the classroom. Essential Functions Teach courses in music theory, instrumental and vocal performance, and music history for students in grades five through twelve. Deliver lessons that teach students the core competencies of Altamont’s music program, which are to cultivate an appreciation for music, unlock a capacity for creative expression, and develop musical skills and techniques. Use a variety of instructional methods to facilitate active student participation. Offer students encouragement, support, and honest feedback. Maintain a classroom environment that is enthusiastic, engaging, and inclusive. Exhibit strong classroom management skills. Assess student progress while maintaining close communication with parents and appropriate school personnel. Mentor advanced music students as they hone their technical abilities and develop their musical style. Showcase student work by organizing performances and concerts for the Altamont and greater Birmingham communities. Sponsor the Altamont Musicians Society. Support the mission, policies, and practices of The Altamont School. Required Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree in music education, music performance, or a related field from an accredited college or university. Experience teaching music and organizing and directing musical ensembles. Flexibility, organization, decision making, and problem-solving skills. Strong communication (verbal and written), public relations, and interpersonal skills. Ability to meet deadlines, work on multiple projects, and coordinate the work of students.
