Carson Visual and Performing Arts Academy (FPCVPAA), a public charter school located in the heart of Mobile, AL provides a seven•year comprehensive academic and conservatory arts program to students in grades 6-12. Established in 2023, FPC VPAA is one of the premier arts schools in Alabama, where aspiring young artists have the opportunity to refine their skills and flourish in one of 16 pre-professional arts conservatories.

Position Description:

The Brass Specialist provides vision and direction in Floretta P. Carson Visual and Performing Arts Academy’s Band Program in alignment with National Music Standards and FPC’s philosophy and strategic goals. The instructor selects repertoire, teaches, and conducts MS/HS brass students. The Brass Specialist will lead excellence in student musicianship while maintaining a climate that encourages student engagement, participation, and creativity. The instructor will work collaboratively with the Band Director, Woodwind Specialist, Strings Specialist, and Percussion Specialist to ensure program continuity and excellence across all grade levels.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

•Ensemble Leadership Serves as co-conductor and teacher for Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced Band as well as Jazz Band and Marching Band. Partners with the Band Director, Woodwind Specialist, Strings Specialist, and Percussion Director to choose repertoire. Prepares students for numerous performances throughout the year. Leads sectional rehearsals with emphasis on brass instruction across all grade levels. Participates in weekly cross-divisional Band meetings inclusive of all Band faculty. Collaborates with team to integrate the various ensembles for concerts and events.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

•Curriculum Development and Oversight Implements comprehensive band curriculum in collaboration with the band director. Creates developmentally appropriate progression of skills from beginning through advanced grade. Develops assessment tools and rubrics for brass student progress. Creates lesson plans and instructional materials that address diverse learning needs.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

•Brass Specialist Duties Provides specialized brass instruction across all grade levels. Leads brass sectionals and small group instruction. Mentor students in proper brass technique and maintenance. Develops specialized jazz brass skills. Collaborates with other instrumental specialists to ensure balanced ensemble development.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

•Administration and Organization Assists with management of the band music library. Supports facility and equipment logistics. Assists with concert and event production. Supports registration for Events and Festivals. Maintains inventory of school-owned brass instruments.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

•Parent and Community Engagement Serves as a contact for the band program. Plans and coordinates concerts and performance events in collaboration with the band director. Maintains regular communication with parents regarding student progress and program updates in collaboration with the band director. Coordinates parent volunteers for band events in collaboration with band director and other team specialists. Assists with parent meetings as needed in collaboration with the band director.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

•Assessment and Progress Tracking In conjunction with the full Band Team, develops and implements assessment strategies for individual brass and jazz ensemble growth. Maintains accurate records of student attendance and achievement. Documents student progress and prepares progress reports. Perform other duties as assigned.
