Essential Functions:
The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as an illustration of the various types of work that may be performed. Provides learning experiences and teaches the course of study prescribed by the District approved curriculum. Instructs pupils in general music and chorus. Prepares lesson plans and establishes course goals. Provides individual and group instruction designed to meet individual needs and motivate students. Establishes and maintains standards of student control required to achieve effective participation in all activities. Selects music and supplies for courses. Demonstrates method and procedure to pupils. Observes and evaluates pupils’ work to determine student progress or to make suggestions forimprovement. Provides appropriate instruction and activities for students to meet school/district policies, goals and objectives.
May specialize in teaching one or more areas of music, such as music theory, performance, and chorus. May direct planning and supervision of student contests and arranging of student performances. Communicates with parents through a variety of means in addition to report card cycles. Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude and learning problems. Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and/or professional growth activities and university courses.
Additional requirements:
Education and Experience:
Masters Degree preferred; Bachelors Degree in the area of study is required with a minimum of five years teaching experience, preferably in a middle school setting; or any combination of education and work experience.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Valid Massachusetts Teaching License with certification as a Music Teacher.
Skills and Ability:
Must be able to manage music supplies, equipment, tools and classroom, budget, and storage spaces. Must be able to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Direct the Chorus. Requires the ability to conceptualize and create music and encourage creative flow while applying musicalprinciples. Requires the ability to work with other instrumental music teachers and/or fine arts teachers

Selects and requisitions instructional materials; maintains inventory records. Performs other related work as required by the Principal or Assistant Principal.
