Organizational Unit Overview The Department of Physical Therapy has strong administrative support, excellent teaching, research, and clinical facilities, and attracts top-quality students. Five well-equipped research labs are maintained by the department and existing PT faculty are in place to collaborate on projects including musculoskeletal modeling, postural control and sensorimotor processing, blood and muscle analysis, pediatric rehabilitation strategies, and more. The Department’s 15 full-time faculty members all contribute to the fully accredited three-year Doctor of Physical Therapy program with 30 students admitted annually. Department faculty may also mentor PhD students enrolled in the Movement Sciences and Disorders concentration of the College of Allied Health Sciences Rehabilitation Sciences PhD degree program. Opportunities for clinical practice are available through the Department faculty clinic and the pro bono inter-professional Student Run Clinic.
East Carolina University is located in Greenville, North Carolina. Greenville is the cultural, educational, medical, and economic center of Eastern North Carolina. The Greenville/Pitt County area has a population of approximately 175,000 and is one hour from the Research Triangle to the west and the Crystal Coast to the east. East Carolina University (27,000 students) is part of a vibrant healthcare community including ECU Health Medical Center, a level 1 trauma center, and a 1400+ bed health system serving more than 1.4 million people in 29 eastern North Carolina counties. The ECU College of Allied Health Sciences has strong working relationships with the ECU College of Health and Human Performance, College of Engineering and Technology, Brody School of Medicine, School of Dental Medicine, and East Carolina Diabetes and Obesity Institute. ECU is home to both Army and Air Force ROTC programs and is in proximity to Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marine, and Navy bases. The Department of Physical Therapy is in close proximity to the College of Nursing, Laupus Health Sciences Library, Brody School of Medicine, School of Dental Medicine, and ECU Health Medical Center.
Job Duties The Department of Physical Therapy at East Carolina University is seeking candidates for a full-time, 12-month tenured position at the Associate or Full Professor level. The successful candidate will provide leadership for the Physical Therapy faculty and work to continuously improve the education of Doctor of Physical Therapy students and scholarship in the department. The Chair of the department reports directly to the Dean of the College of Allied Health Sciences and will be asked to advance the college’s vision of state and national distinction in professional education, research, and service. The Chair is also responsible for meeting the requirements set forth by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education.
Specific Duties include:

  • Providing administrative support and leadership for the department by communicating priorities, standards, and procedures effectively, articulate vision for the department, promote shared governance and academic freedom within the department and college.
  • Contributing to the formulation and execution of College and University policies and
    regulations.
  • Overseeing the development, execution, and review of a departmental strategic plan and ensuring that it aligns with those of the College and University.
  • Providing oversight of the department operations and budget including clinical operations and budget.
  • Teaching and conducting research and scholarship in their area of expertise.
  • Providing oversight, support, recruitment, development, and retention of faculty and staff.
  • Providing support in evaluating and recommending faculty for promotion/tenure and
    advancement in rank according to university policies.
  • Support faculty research, grant writing opportunities, and additional scholarly creative activities.
  • Participating in program development, reviewing processes, curricular changes,
    accreditation activities, and self-studies.
  • Developing workload and annual workplan expectations in collaboration with faculty and staff.
  • Conducting annual performance reviews of faculty and staff and merit recommendations to the Dean.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean.

    Minimum Education/Experience
  • Earned academic doctoral degree
  • Eligible for physical therapy licensure in North Carolina
  • Must be eligible for tenure with the rank of Associate or Full Professor within the academic unit code.
  • Minimum of six years of full-time higher education experience, with a minimum of three
    years of full-time experience as a core faculty in a CAPTE accredited physical therapist
    education program
    License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation None

  • Evidence of effective leadership characteristics and ability to make sound decisions
    relative to physical therapy curriculum and professional development, strategic planning,
    and engaged service opportunities
  • A collaborative leadership style
  • Experience with clinical business administration
  • Understanding of CAPTE accreditation procedures
  • Knowledge of academic governance
  • Familiarity with the development and/or promotion of graduate studies at the doctoral level

  • A record of substantial nationally recognized scholarly productivity
  • Strong written, oral, and interpersonal skills
  • Academic history of excellence in teaching, research, and service
  • Knowledge of current trends in the field of physical therapy
