Full Job Description Summary:

The Assistant Director, in conjunction with the Director of Children’s Programs, provides leadership and ensures the health and safety of each child. This person also supervises the day-to-day functions of the agency in accordance with the philosophy, goals, and mission as outlined in the Family Handbook; agency policies and procedures; and OCFS licensing requirements. Also assists in achieving and maintaining NAEYC accreditation and QUALITYstarsNY standards for high quality programming. Assumes administrative responsibilities for the management of the center in the Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Oversee all aspects of the child care program including infants, toddlers, preschool and school age. Responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating developmentally appropriate curriculum. Sets up the physical environments to meet changing needs, maintain a safe, clean, and pleasant environment. Models and instructs teaching staff in best practices. Directly supervise child care teaching staff, providing regular support and coaching. Regularly communicates with parents regarding their children and provides general development information. Create and maintain the daily staffing schedule. Schedules and facilites regular classroom team meetings and provides individual supervision. Requests and coordinates supply orders in conjunction with the Director of Children’s Programs. Provides program orientation for new child care staff. Differentiates professional development based on individual staff needs and according to New York State OCFS regulatory requirements for Infants, Toddlers, Preschool and School Age Childcare. Responsible for licensing renewal, working in conjunction with the Director of Children’s Programs and management team to ensure successful completion. Supports teaching staff related to parent concerns, needs, and conflicts to facilitate positive ongoing communication, ensure that bi-annual parent conferences occur. Maintains knowledge of and access to various community service agencies that provide support and intervention to children and families. Responsible for being available for backup coverage if needed in classrooms as schedule allows. Works in conjunction with Human Resources and the Director of Children’s Programs in the hiring process of childcare staff. Direct oversight of the medication station including record keeping, audits and OCFS med compliance. Acts as a backup health advocate and MAT person, while ensuring we had an adequate number of MAT trained staff. Develops and maintains good working relationships with state licensing authorities, community contacts and corporate personnel. Develops positive relationships with parents as partners in the development of their children, including daily parent communication, parent education, and parent-teacher contacts. Ensures that all paperwork and record keeping is completed on time and maintained according to agency standards. Other duties as assigned.

Math Ability:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of word processing software, spreadsheet software, accounting software, inventory software, payroll systems, development software, internet software, and database software, but not all are required.

Education/Experience:

Bachelor’s degree degree, including or in addition to 12 credits in Early Childhood, Child Development or a related field; minimum of one year of full-time teaching experience in a child care center, family or group family day care home or other early childhood program; and a minimum of one year of experience supervising staff in a child care program or a related field of work; OR A New York State Children’s Program Administrator Credential; one year of full-time teaching experience in a child care center, family or group family day care home or other early childhood program; and one year of experience supervising staff in a child care program or a related field of work; or OR An Associate’s degree in Early Childhood or related field, with a plan of study leading to a Bachelor’s degree or a New York State Children’s Program Administrator Credential; two years of full-time teaching experience in a child care center, family or group family day care home or other early childhood program; and two years of experience supervising staff in a child care program or a related field of work; OR A Child Development Associate Credential or other Office-recognized credential, with a plan of study leading to a Bachelor’s degree or a New York State Children’s Program Administrator Credential; two years of full-time teaching experience in a child care center, family or group family day care home or other early childhood program; and two years of experience supervising staff in a child care program or a related field of work.

Certificates and Licenses:

NYS Birth-Grade 2 Teaching Certification preferred MAT Certification preferred CPR and First Aid Certifications preferred
