Part-time Preschool Teacher Yorktown Community Nursery School Yorktown Heights, NY 10598 a play- based cooperative preschool, is seeking a dynamic, creative loving, NYS certified head teacher for our 3-year-old program. This position is part-time, M, T, TH from 8:15 am-12:00 pm, starting salary $8,600.00. Please send resume to ycnsdirector@ycns.org.

POSITION SUMMARY

Responsible for developing and implementing a program of activities that promotes the social, emotional, cognitive and physical development of each child in accordance with the educational policy of YCNS and the New York State Early Learning standards. The teacher will have an interest in and willingness to work with parents as a special requirement of this school, based on the philosophy of the nursery school that the school provides a learning experience for parents as well as children and that learning experience provides a better understanding of children.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
  • Develop a positive relationship with each child and promote the development of self-esteem and self-discipline.
  • Provide a variety of materials and resources for children to explore, manipulate and use, both in learning activities and in imaginative play.
  • Plan and implement a curriculum that includes activities in the area of arts, science, tinkering, math, dramatic play, music and movement.
  • Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration and playtime that provides children with opportunities to observe, question and investigate.
  • Meet with Director to review curriculum plans and activities and evaluate program’s effectiveness.
  • Set up and maintain a well-organized, safe and attractive classroom environment conducive to the optimal growth and development.
  • Plan and supervise class projects, field trips, visits by guest or other experiential activities and guide students in learning from those activities.
  • Observe each child daily to assess skills, interests and needs and use this information to facilitate learning and growth.
  • Review the progress of each child and develop plans to promote each child’s growth and development
  • Oversee children to make sure that they are safe during indoor/outdoor activities.
  • Meet regularly with Assistant Teacher to develop weekly plans and activities.
  • Collaborate with assistant teacher the preparing materials and supplies in advance for activities.
  • Provide day-to-day supervision and support to teacher assistants which include sharing daily program plans and discussing goals for children.
  • Sit with children at snack time to model good eating habits, table manners, and promote conversation and positive social exchanges.
  • Direct assistant teacher, participating parent in the setting up and cleaning up of snack and supplies.
  • Help children in changing or cleaning themselves if accidents or spills occur.
  • Observes children to detect signs of illness, injury, learning disorder, speech problem, or other special needs and ensure that it is communicated to the Director and parents for follow-up.
  • Observes children for any suspected or disclosed signs of child abuse or child neglect and immediately report observations to the Director.
  • Establish a positive relationship with each child’s family and share information about the child’s day.
  • Help parents to understand the curriculum and find ways to involve parents in the daily program.
  • Conduct individual parent-teacher conferences at least twice a year to discuss child’s progress and needs, determine their priorities for their children and suggest ways that they can promote learning and development.
  • Keep abreast of current educational philosophies and application thereof.
  • The extent of the teacher’s responsibility for coverage of class shall begin forty-five minutes prior to commencement of class and end 15 minutes after the finish.
  • Participate in staff meetings and staff development days paid for by YCNS.
  • In addition to regularly scheduled class days, participate in school activities such as Parent Orientation night, New Family Open House, and the Art Festival.
