POSITION
Elementary Reading Coach /ARI Reading Literacy Specialist
REPORTS TO
Principal and Senior Director of Curriculum and Instruction
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree or higher preferred At least five (5) years teaching experience Completed ARI Foundational Training and LETRS professional learning AL Teaching Certification in Reading is preferred. Will also consider Elementary Education or Special Education.
RESPONSIBILITIES
An ARI-funded local reading specialist must meet all of the following minimum qualifications: Possess a valid Alabama Professional Educator Certificate Hold a bachelor’s degree and have completed advanced coursework or professional development in the science of reading, such as multisensory language instruction or other comparable training approved by the Alabama State Board of Education Have a minimum of two years of successful experience as an elementary or literacy teacher. Demonstrate a strong foundation in scientifically based reading research, with expertise in effective reading instruction and intervention, dyslexia-specific strategies, and data analysis. Possess a thorough understanding of both the science of learning to read and early childhood education. Exhibit excellent communication, presentation, interpersonal, and time management skills Duties and Responsibilities Collaborate weekly with the school principal to develop and implement a strategic coaching plan aligned with the science of reading, baseline school data, and approved early reading assessment tools. Facilitate schoolwide professional development and monitor the implementation and effectiveness of instructional practices. Model explicit and systematic instruction based on the science of reading, providing guided practice, feedback, and error correction techniques. Coach and mentor teachers through structured coaching cycles driven by data, with a focus on gradually building teacher independence. Lead PLC and data analysis discussions and assist teachers in using assessment results to differentiate instruction and adhere to the tiered instruction framework Support continuous professional learning across multiple areas, including content knowledge and exceptional student education, adapting based on student and teacher needs. Prioritize high-impact activities—such as in-class coaching and mentoring—to improve student reading outcomes, documented through coaching logs, student performance data, and site visit evaluations. Monitor reading progress for all students at least three times per year and recommend instructional adjustments based on multi-point data, aligned to the science of reading and strategic coaching plans. Collaborate with other reading specialists and attend all ARI-hosted professional learning opportunities, including assigned Coaching Communities. Implements individual coaching plans Models peer coaching, including lesson plans and data disaggregated. Must serve as a mentor to first- and second-year teachers within the building. Must provide summer learning support for a minimum of two weeks during summer school. (Compensation will be provided.)
