FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCE TEACHER

To provide classroom and laboratory experiences empowering students to enter employment and/or further education and training in a Family and Consumer Sciences career field.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited educational institution. Valid certification by the State of Alabama in Home Economics or Family and Consumer Sciences.
Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
Follow the Course of Study for the Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) Education and Training Cluster Programs adopted by the Alabama State Board of Education, curriculum guides, and textbooks approved and adopted by the Limestone County Board of Education.

- 1 credit Develop annual, semester, and daily lesson plans; visual aids and other materials that will make teaching effective.
The performance based instruction concept should be included in all lesson plans: condition, standard and behavior.
FCCLA/FTA
is an integral part of the instructional program. Family and Consumer Sciences departments sponsor a FCCLA Chapter/FTA Chapter. Each Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher serves as an advisor to the local chapter. It is necessary that time be spent in planning and conducting leadership, citizenship, and cooperative activities. Keep systematic records on former students as one means of evaluating the program. Assist graduates in finding employment. Maintain documentation of contacts made and placements. The instructor has a definite responsibility to work with guidance counselors in assisting students in making occupational choices for which their special aptitudes, background, and experience qualify them. Become familiar with the local school policy and operate within this policy. Prepare and submit all reports required by the local school system and state office promptly and keep an accurate copy of all records and reports in your files for ready reference. Assume a responsible role in public and professional relations by actively participating in civic, professional, business and other community organizations and keep the public informed as part of the public relations program. Work with the news media to see that news articles are published regarding the FACS program and FCCLA and FTA chapters. Continue professional growth by holding membership in professional organizations. Participate in professional and in-service meetings. Attend summer workshops that are designed to provide needed professional skills and knowledge. Maintain instructional facilities by creating an Education and Training Program Setting in the classroom, plan for and maintain visual aids and references, order new equipment and supplies, maintain accurate inventory records, and establish procedures for keeping classroom, office and department neat and attractive and up-to-standards at all times. Place emphasis on the use of decision-making and problem-solving techniques in applying science and mathematics in education and training. Emphasize the proper care, use, and maintenance of equipment. Ensure the program complies with local, state, and federal safety and environmental regulations. Participate in the efficient and effective operation of the school and school system. Responsibilities will include participation in planning meetings, conferences, and various committees in the school and system. Hold the required number of Career and Technical Advisory Committee meetings with five broadly based members of the field to link the school program with the workforce. Prepare for classes assigned, show written evidence of preparation upon request of principal/career tech director at the local school, and maintain a classroom environment conducive to learning. Keep accurate, complete records and evaluate student progress as required by law, board policy, and administrative regulations. Take reasonable precautions to protect students and to safeguard all equipment, materials and facilities. Cooperate with other staff members in planning school activities, instructional goals, objectives, methods, and faculty meetings. Abide by the standards established by the Limestone County Board of Education for professional and personal conduct of teachers. Uphold and enforce Limestone County Board of Education policy. Promote good public relations for the Limestone County School System. Engage in other reasonable duties during school necessary to the safe and effective operation of the school when requested by the principal. Provide consultative services to businesses, teachers, and parents. Foster communication between all agencies involved with the program. Provide credentialing/articulation opportunities to students. Seek and/or maintain Business Industry Certification. Performs other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s).

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk and use hands to finger, to handle, or feel objects, equipment, or controls. The employee is frequently required to talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, bend, stoop, squat, and crouch and kneel. The employee must occasionally lift, push, pull, carry and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include near vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
