This role is for an educator who will collaboratively prepare students with the tools and knowledge to critically engage in the field of science and develop into self-directed learners. The curriculum emphasizes inquiry-based learning, student discourse, and scientific practices, with the goal of fostering a passion for scientific questioning and analysis.

Key Responsibilities:

InstructionFacilitate a curriculum encompassing Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Environmental Sciences, preparing students for Advanced Placement (AP) and collegiate level coursework.

Develop students’ practical skills including questioning, modeling, constructing explanations, data analysis, argumentation, and planning and conducting interactive labs.

Cultivate an environment where students feel confident using their voice for scientific discourse.

Lead student-led discourse, encouraging students to use evidence for sophisticated claims, and to synthesize and critique arguments.

Guide student-led inquiry into various scientific topics and engage students in lab and project-based performance tasks.

Collaborate with the Science department to establish academic and engagement goals for students. Data AnalysisParticipate in weekly meetings with a principal or instructional coach to analyze and respond to trends in student work samples and assessments.

Learn and implement strategies to differentiate instruction for all learners in the classroom. School CultureBuild positive relationships with students to ensure they feel seen, valued, and supported.

Partner with students’ families to ensure appropriate resources are available to support their child’s learning needs.

Engage in practice-based professional development, mentorship, and coaching sessions.

Participate in weekly, school-wide meetings to cultivate community, model core values, and encourage student achievement.

Collaborate with the grade level team to develop academic goals and practice instructional strategies.

Requirements:

A demonstrated commitment to supporting students’ social emotional and academic development. An enthusiasm for collaborating with internal and external partners in the best interest of students. A self-directed learner who actively seeks and implements feedback to improve outcomes and achieve objectives.

Required Experience:

A demonstrated interest in impacting K-12 students in urban schools and communities (1-2 years experience preferred). Academic expertise in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, or other related fields of study. Prior to the start of employment, a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required. Certification is not required for hiring, but the candidate must meet New York state certification eligibility requirements. This may include enrolling in a teacher preparation program and maintaining a GPA of 2.75 or higher during employment if a degree in education is not held. Teachers are required to become certified in the state of New York within a reasonable period after beginning employment.

Candidates without full-time teaching experience will likely have a starting salary of $50,000.
