JOB SUMMARY

The Summer Camp Chess Counselor at Miami Country Day School is responsible for providing a fun, educational, and engaging chess experience for campers. The counselor will foster a positive learning environment, develop campers’ chess skills, and promote strategic thinking and sportsmanship.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & TASKS

Plans and implements chess activities and lessons tailored to various skill levels. Guides and mentors campers in developing their chess strategies and techniques. Organizes and oversees chess tournaments and friendly matches among campers. Encourages teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving through chess. Ensures a safe and inclusive environment for all campers. Communicates effectively with campers, parents, and other staff members. Monitors and assess campers’ progress and provide feedback to enhance their skills. Maintains chess equipment and ensure it is used responsibly. Collaborates with other camp staff to integrate chess activities with broader camp programs. Upholds the values and mission of Miami Country Day School throughout all interactions with campers and staff.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

High school diploma or equivalent; college coursework in education, recreation, or related fields is preferred. Previous experience working with children in a camp, educational, or recreational setting. Demonstrated experience in teaching or playing chess, with the ability to instruct various skill levels. Experience in planning and leading activities for groups of children. Strong knowledge of chess rules, strategies, and techniques. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with children, parents, and staff. Ability to create a fun and engaging learning environment. Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously. Patience and enthusiasm for working with children of different ages and skill levels. Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team. CPR and First Aid certification is preferred but not required.
