Overview:
Join the vibrant team at WB Surf Camp as a Surf Instructor and share your passion for the ocean with campers of all ages! As a Surf Instructor for our Day Camp program, you will provide expert surf and ocean safety instruction in a fun, engaging, and safe environment. Our program attracts participants from around the world who are eager to learn how to surf. If you have a passion for marine conservation, teaching, and inspiring youth, we want you to be part of our team! This position requires you to work collaboratively with fellow staff members to ensure that all participants have a safe and life-enriching experience. Surf instruction experience is not required, as we provide comprehensive in-house training. However, proficiency in surfing is essential. This position reports to the Unit Leader.
What You’ll Do:
Surf Instruction & Leadership Lead daily surf lessons for campers, teaching ocean safety, surf etiquette, wave dynamics, and proper paddling techniques. Provide a safe, encouraging, and fun environment for participants of all skill levels. Supervise participants during surf sessions, ensuring their safety in and out of the water. Program & Curriculum Delivery Implement the day’s program schedule and curriculum, incorporating fun and educational surf-related activities. Conduct ground schools, explaining key surf concepts, ocean safety, and environmental awareness. Lead discussions and hands-on activities about ocean science, rip currents, barrier island ecology, and more. Logistics & Equipment Management Assist with daily camp setup and breakdown, including loading/unloading equipment and preparing materials. Maintain and manage camp inventory, ensuring equipment is in good working order and ready for each session. Help organize and clean camp facilities and vehicles at the end of each day. Communication & Team Collaboration Communicate professionally with campers, parents, and fellow instructors to provide updates and address any questions. Participate in team meetings to discuss logistics, camper progress, and any issues that may arise. Foster a positive, supportive team environment while maintaining high energy levels throughout long days.
Responsibilities:
Lead surf lessons and provide instruction on ocean safety and surf etiquette. Manage daily camp logistics, including setup and breakdown, and help ensure all equipment is ready for use. Supervise participants during lessons, ensuring their safety and well-being. Engage campers with interactive and educational activities about marine life and the environment. Assist with camp inventory, ensuring all equipment is properly maintained and organized. Maintain professionalism in interactions with campers, parents, and team members. Participate in daily team meetings to review schedules and camper progress. Foster a positive and supportive environment, helping all participants feel welcome and confident.
Skills and Qualifications:
Required:
At least 16 years of age. Minimum of 3 years of surfing experience. Must be in excellent physical condition, capable of lifting 50 lbs unassisted. Lifeguard, CPR, and First Aid certifications (must be current at the start of staff training in late May). Ability to attend mandatory preseason staff training (dates to be provided). Willingness to work long hours, including some weekends and holidays. Strong communication, decision-making, logistical, and organizational skills. Reliable, punctual team player with a positive, energetic attitude. Clean driving record and the ability to pass a government background check.
Preferred:
Pursuing or holding a BA/BS in Marine Biology, Environmental Science, Education, Recreation, or related fields. Familiarity with southeastern marine ecosystems and organisms. - 11:45 AM, weekly from early June to mid-August. Staff must attend mandatory training in late May (May 23rd
- May 30th).
