TITLE:

Special Education/Gifted Specialist

JOB GOALS

To provide support and assistance under direction of the Special Education Coordinator to special education/gifted programs and services in conformance to district procedures and state and federal laws; providing written support and/or conveying information; serving as a resource to school personnel and the district special education coordinator to ensure objectives of programs and services are achieved.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Alabama Teaching Certificate endorsed in areas of special education, gifted education, psychometry or related field Good public relations skills Ability to use technology proficiently Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457 Ability to work collaboratively with large and/or diverse groups and individuals to problem solve and accomplish goals Physical strength, mobility, dexterity, stamina, and acuity to perform job responsibilities Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license Proficiency in oral, written, and electronic communications and able to use various technological devices/software Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and perform assignments as directed with accuracy, attention to detail, and within established time frames Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance Ability to provide or have access to appropriate transportation to perform job responsibilities at various school sites or other settings are required. Possess knowledge of relevant district policies, special education laws and transition planning and services Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the board may require

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Demonstrates support for the school system, its purpose, direction, and Demonstrates the ability to multi-task and to prioritize tasks Maintains confidentiality of any Board of Education business, its staff, and its Demonstrates and models regular and predictable Demonstrates professional appearance and demeanor at all Uses technology for communication, presentations, research, data analysis, budgeting, record keeping, reporting, scheduling, and other job responsibilities as Maintains special education and gifted files Collaborates with District personnel and peers for the purpose of implementing and maintain services and programs. Coordinates program components, support needs and materials for the purpose of delivering services that conform to established guidelines. Provides assistance to the Special Education Coordinator in developing proposals, new programs, and grants collaboratively as part of the Special Education Team. Present professional development as needed to staff in accordance with state/district mandates, initiatives and improvements. Monitors assigned programs and projects for the purpose of complying with district and state curriculum and instructional objectives. Prepares written documents for the purpose of responding to inquiries, conveying information or memorializing meetings. Assist with the presentation of information on programs, services, regulations, etc. for the purpose of serving as a resource for parents, school personnel or the Board of Education. Plans, organizes, and coordinates Special Olympics and all related Handles requests for records and documentation related to disability determination for special education students. Delivers testing equipment at beginning of school year, and picks up testing equipment at end of school year for storage. Completes disability determination records and documentation requests throughout the school year. Files special education records and documentation for all active and exited special education students throughout the school year. Moves inactive files from active file cabinets to inactive file Creates folders for new special education students and special education referrals of students that did not qualify. Collaborates with the Special Education Coordinator to prepare eligible files for Maintain tracking logs, assist in the coordination of assessments and assist in child find and gifted experiences as needed Purchases supplies as needed by special education teachers and Delivers purchased supplies to small group setting classrooms as Prepares copies of student files for legal Distributes Child Find literature to local businesses and schools Collects all records from special education teachers and speech Assists newly hired special education teachers as Ensures that compliance verification forms are complete and up-to- Ensures special education documentation and records and are complete with necessary signatures. Participates in the school improvement process and the implementation of school improvement plans, accreditation and accountability reports, and other required plans as needed. Demonstrates initiative to improve job performance and in areas of Meets with various stakeholders to communicate and develop partnerships to benefit the school and community.
