General Description:
The Special Education Teacher will serve middle and high school students enrolled in the Rose City School Resilience Program, which is designed to build student resilience, stamina, and academic engagement in hybrid or in-person learning environments. The ideal candidate will demonstrate expertise in delivering individualized instruction, supporting student social-emotional growth, and collaborating with families and staff to help students overcome barriers to attendance, learning, and credit recovery.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide specially designed instruction to students in grades 6-12, targeting both academic goals and the development of coping skills, self-regulation, stress management, and motivation. Implement and monitor individualized support plans in collaboration with social workers, families, and students. Deliver instruction using hybrid models, including in-person and online components (e.g., APEX Learning or similar platforms). Support students in credit attainment and progression toward graduation by aligning instruction with IEP goals and graduation requirements. Collaborate closely with school social workers, counselors, and outside providers to ensure comprehensive wraparound services. Conduct regular communication and outreach with families, including home visits and participation in parent training and workshops. Participate in team meetings, PPTs, and data reviews to evaluate student progress and adjust instructional strategies as needed. Support gradual re-entry plans for students with inconsistent school attendance or transitions from out-of-district placements. Maintain compliance with all IEP documentation, service delivery logs, and data collection. Preferred Qualifications Valid Connecticut Special Education Certification (or eligibility). Experience working with students who have social-emotional, behavioral, or mental health needs. Familiarity with APEX or other online learning platforms and experience in hybrid instructional delivery. Strong understanding of trauma-informed practices and resilience-based approaches. Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team. Knowledge of or willingness to learn evidence-based family support programs (e.g., Safety Care for Families, Mental Health First Aid). Commitment to equity, inclusivity, and restorative practices in education. Strong interpersonal and communication skills with students, families, and colleagues. Flexible, solution-oriented mindset with a focus on relationship-building. Capacity to implement innovative, student-centered instructional practices. Enthusiastic about contributing to a new, mission-driven program focused on meaningful outcomes. Terms of Employment:
Salary and work year to be determined by the contract between the Norwich Board of Education and the Norwich Teachers League.
