Position Description

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION

The Summer Camp Teacher is responsible for creating a safe, engaging, and inclusive environment for children during the summer camp program. This role involves planning and leading age-appropriate activities, supporting campers’ social and emotional development, and collaborating closely with camp staff to ensure a positive experience for all participants. The Summer Camp Teacher works with various groups and must be flexible, enthusiastic, and committed to fostering a fun and enriching camp environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Summer Camp Program Planning:

Prepare detailed lesson plans for each week’s summer session with an appropriate balance of independent and teacher directed activities, a broad range of experiences, and frequent opportunities for children to make choices about what they do. Ensure that materials and equipment are available to support planned activities.

Educational Activities:

Assist in all aspects of program planning, implementation, and follow developmentally appropriate practices and Department of Public Welfare (DPW) regulations.

Physical Environment:

Assist the teaching team in creating a physical space that maximizes the independence of children, provides a safe and stimulating environment, enables effective use of space, and provides an attractive and welcoming environment by organizing classroom space in a functional, clean, neat and attractive way that encourages children to use materials as independently as is appropriate. Labeling spaces and materials so that it is clear to children and adults in the room where things belong. Displaying children’s work in a way that is attractive and informative to visitors and promotes children’s self-esteem. Alerting Program Director to any concerns about cleanliness, needed repairs, or safety. Comply with established policies, procedures, and regulations of the Parks & Recreation Department and the City. Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.

KNOWLEDGE OF

Knowledge of various recreational activities and programs. Knowledge of programs and activities. Knowledge of safety regulations and emergency procedures.

SKILLS AND ABILITY TO

Skill in organizing activities and promoting a safe environment Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public Ability to plan, organize and carry out daily and special programs Ability to serve as a positive role model for campers, including attitude, punctuality, treating others with respect, sportsmanship, etc. Ability to work as part of a team to ensure that all camper’s needs are met in a fair and appropriate way. Ability to remain calm and act resourcefully in an emergency and in stressful situations. Ability to recognize and respond to opportunities for group problem solving. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Ability to keep camp supplies and equipment in good shape. Ability to work with a variety of age and skill levels.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Experience working with children in a camp, classroom, or recreational setting Current CPR and First Aid certification required (or willingness to obtain prior to starting date) Strong communication and teamwork skills Must pass background screening and meet all state childcare personnel requirements.
