1 Atlanta, GA Job Details Full-time $30 an hour 18 hours ago Qualifications Doctoral degree Mid-level Bachelor’s degree 4 years Full Job Description The Animal Care Specialist is an expert in one or more specialized areas of lab animal science (breeding, aquatics, etc.). They are tasked with the overall husbandry management of a particular technical specialty such as species, housing room(s) or operational unit(s). They also provide technical assistance to researchers and veterinary staff, as required and related to field of specialization. This position will interact on a regular basis with: Other staff members (technicians, managers & veterinarians) as well as researchers (Ph.D.) and students (graduate and undergraduate). This position typically will advise and counsel: Other staff members (technicians) as well as researchers (Ph.D.) and students (graduate and undergraduate).

This position will supervise:

N/A Responsibilities Job Duty 1

  • Feeds and cleans animal enclosures/housing systems and supervises the administration of special diets/housing conditions Job Duty 2
  • Observes and monitors animals for signs of illness, trauma, or social instability Job Duty 3
  • Monitors environmental conditions in animal housing rooms and inspects the condition of facilities and equipment for cleanliness and proper operation Job Duty 4
  • Maintains daily records pertaining to animal care, environmental data and facility cleanliness/maintenance Job Duty 5
  • Trains other animal care providers and new employees Job Duty 6
  • Participates in daily scheduling of technician tasks and checks completion within unit of oversight. Follows all protocols and standard operating procedures as directed by management. Job Duty 7
  • Participates in staff meetings, training classes, professional development and continuing education as directed Job Duty 8
  • May act in a lead capacity in the Manager’s absence and may be called on to take over other duties not covered by Animal Care Technicians as needed Job Duty 9
  • Complies with Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) standards and other applicable federal and state regulations when working with hazardous chemicals, materials, animals and power equipment Job Duty 10
  • Performs other related duties as assigned Required Qualifications 4+ years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications Additional Preferred Qualifications American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) certification at Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) level. Preferred Educational Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in a scientific field. Preferred Experience 6+ years of experience. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities SKILLS Requires adequate experience and applicable skills to area of specialization (TBD by manager).

Specialized skills preferred:

Additional experience and skills within AND outside area of specialization (i.e. in one or more other areas of specialization as well).
