Special Education Teacher

WALES ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the direction of the school principal, the special education teacher plans and provides for appropriate learning experiences for students with disabilities in a variety of educational settings. The person in this position is responsible for creating a flexible program and learning environment that provides specialized instruction for students with disabilities, such that the students benefit from the general education curriculum to the greatest extent possible when supported with supplemental aids, accommodations, and other needed supports.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Provide accommodations/ modifications according to individualized educational plans to ensure students are given access to general education curriculum and instruction.
  • Monitor effectiveness of instructional techniques and adjust instruction to maximize student understanding of content and address student learning goals identified on the IEP.
  • Collaborate with related service providers and coordinate services for assigned students.
  • Establish coordinated systems with Paraprofessionals to ensure specially designed instruction, modifications and accommodations are implemented.
  • Develop and implement student schedules in order to ensure that student goals are being addressed meaningfully.
  • Employ special educational strategies and techniques during instruction to improve the development of sensory and perceptual motor skills, language, cognition and memory.
  • Maintain alignment with state and federal regulations and timelines
  • Collaborate and Create student specific curriculum and instructional materials
  • Provide Direct Instruction in areas identified on student specific educational plans including: academic skills, social skills, related adaptive functioning, and curriculum access.
  • Co-Teach using embedded Literacy strategies, and executive functioning strategies
  • Provide systemic reading programs.
  • Teach socially acceptable behavior, as determined by the students’ individualized education program (IEP’s) by employing techniques corresponding to the school-wide positive behavior support system.
  • Modify the general education curriculum for students with disabilities based upon a variety of techniques and technologies.
  • Actively participate in meetings to collaboratively develop individualized education programs (IEP’s) designed to promote students’ educational, physical, and social/emotional development.
  • Conduct educational assessments, write reports, monitor student progress and present results at Team Meetings.
  • Maintain accurate and complete student records and prepare reports on students and activities as required by laws, district policies, and administrative regulations.
  • Establish objectives for all lessons, units and projects; appropriate for students with individualized plans and align with MA State Standards.
  • Develop plans for effective communication, monitoring, and follow-up of students in inclusive classroom settings.
  • Provide especially designed research based reading instruction.
  • Assist in the collection of data for providing appropriate classroom interventions and the development of goals.
  • Serve as a member of a multidisciplinary team as appropriate.
  • Assist in preparation of data for local, state and federal reports.
  • Maintain professional competence by participating in staff development meetings and other professional opportunities.
  • Perform related work as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • A valid Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education License, Moderate Special Needs
  • At least one year of successful experience preferred
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Literacy and/or Reading Training (or willingness to participate in training)
  • Approved CORI and Fingerprinting results
