Job Description

Position Title:

Special Education Teacher

Classification:

Exempt

Full time (185 day position)

Salary Schedule:

Teachers/Therapists

Introductory Period:

90 days

Reports To:

Program Administrator

Summary/Objective:

The Teacher will develop and implement curriculum in a therapeutic educational setting specifically designed
to meet the academic, social, personal, and therapeutic needs aligned with the MA Curriculum Frameworks to
students with emotional and learning challenges who are between the ages of 12-22. Instructional practices must
be designed to complement counseling and transition/vocational services offered to students as part of the daily
educational program.

Essential Functions/Duties:

Develops and implements IEPs with clear and appropriate IEP goals and objectives.
Develops programs to meet diverse student needs within the classroom and community settings.
Develops appropriate curriculum consistent with student learning style and the MA Curriculum Frameworks.
Integrates student IEP objectives into classroom curriculum.
Designs and implements lesson plans and activities which incorporate student IEP goals and objectives.
Develops and coordinates successful transition/community integration plans for students.
Models and implements appropriate behavior management in conjunction with mental health providers.
Structures the classroom environment to provide optimal learning opportunities.
Communicates effectively with LEA’s, student families, therapists, and other team members.
Demonstrates effective classroom management techniques.
Supervises classroom staff, interns, and volunteers.
Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary team.
Other duties as assigned by Program Administrator.

Skills required to perform responsibilities effectively.
Common teaching competencies as found in 603 CMR 7.11 (1) (b).
Competencies required to maintain appropriate certification.
