Wakefield High School Program Overview:
The TLC Program at Wakefield High School is a therapeutic special education program designed to support students with social-emotional and behavioral needs that impact their school experience. Through a team-based and inclusive approach, the TLC program integrates academic instruction with therapeutic supports, fostering emotional regulation, resilience, and academic success. Students in the TLC program participate in general education settings to the greatest extent possible, with embedded support from special education staff and counseling services.
Position Summary:
The Special Education Teacher in the TLC program provides direct academic instruction and support to students with social-emotional needs in a structured and supportive environment. This role requires a strong understanding of trauma-informed teaching practices, differentiated instruction, and collaboration with both school-based and community partners. The teacher works closely with an adjustment counselor, related service providers, and classroom teachers to help students build the skills needed to thrive socially, emotionally, and academically.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or a related field required Valid Massachusetts teaching license in Moderate Disabilities (9-12) required
Master’s degree in Special Education preferred
SEI Endorsement preferred
Duties & Responsibilities:
Instruction & Student Support
Deliver specialized instruction aligned with students’ IEPs in academic and functional skill areas or coteach in specific content areas
Adapt curriculum and instructional strategies to meet diverse learning and social-emotional needs
Implement accommodations and modifications in collaboration with general education teachers
Support students’ participation and success in inclusive settings throughout the school day by collaborating with general education and other special education teachers
Therapeutic & Behavioral Support
Collaborate with the school adjustment counselor and team to integrate therapeutic supports into the school day
Reinforce strategies that help students manage emotions, build relationships, and solve problems
Implement and monitor behavior support plans as needed
Provide proactive, strengths-based, and restorative responses to behavioral challenges
Family & Team Collaboration
Partner with families to support student growth and maintain ongoing communication
Participate as a member of the IEP Team and Evaluation Team
Work closely with classroom teachers, specialists, and support staff to ensure consistency and coordination of services
Collaborate with community agencies and outside providers when appropriate
Professional & Administrative Responsibilities
Maintain accurate student records, including data on academic and behavioral progress
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and district special education regulations
Contribute to the overall positive climate and culture of the school and program
Engage in ongoing professional learning focused on inclusive practices, SEL, and trauma-informed approaches
Compensation:
Commensurate with Wakefield Teacher Contract (Unit A)
