Summary of position:
The Walker Beacon School is a therapeutic middle and high school program for students of all genders with mental health, social, and emotional challenges. The Teacher of Severe Special Needs will be responsible for teaching, evaluating, and implementing programming for students in a self-contained cohort of up to eight (8) students with severe/profound disabilities, such as an Emotional or Intellectual impairment, and/or multiple disabilities.
Education and Licensure

Required:

Bachelor’s Degree with MA certification in Severe Special Needs, All Levels

Preferred:

Master’s Degree
Experience

Required:

1 year direct teaching experience

Preferred:

2 years

Required:

A passion for working with and willingness to “go the extra mile” for students with severe/profound disabilities. Ability to be flexible and work collaboratively as part of a team. Ability to work in a stressful environment and juggle multiple priorities successfully. Must understand HIPAA, FERPA and issues of confidentiality.

Essential functions:
Develop and implement course curricula particular to the severe/profound cohort, in accordance with each student’s IEP.
Develop formative and summative assessments, and provide evaluative feedback, for each student in every class.
Provide consultation to other teachers working with the assigned cohort of students.
Maintain attendance records.
Maintain grade/progress records for each class.
Share in finding and ordering of new curriculum materials.
Create a safe environment by incorporating therapeutic supports into the classroom and enforcing all school rules and guidelines.
Attend scheduled meetings, professional development trainings as schedule or assigned.
Complete and submit curriculum outlines and unit subject scope and sequence planning.
Participate in fulfilling administrative tasks for special education students, such as Progress Reports and Individual Educational Plans.
Meet weekly with the Education Coordinator or Principal for supervision.
Document critical incidents, as needed.
Act as Academic Advisor/Homeroom Teacher for the assigned cohort of students.
Share information on student progress with other members of the Walker Beacon School staff, including clinicians, guidance counselors, the nurse and administrators.
Participate in the milieu, including leading activities, advising clubs, and monitoring other student areas.
Provide academic support to assigned students.
Communicate regularly with students and families about progress and/or concerns.
All other duties, as assigned.
Supervision to be received: Reports to and is supervised by the Principal and/or designee
