GENERAL DESCRIPTION

DESCRIBING ROLE
): The literacy specialist teacher manages schoolwide assessment administration, facilitates analysis of data, provides evidence-based intervention to small groups, and provides on-site instructional support and professional development to teachers in the implementation of Tier 1 curricula and Tier 2 evidence-based interventions. The literacy specialist teacher plays a leadership role in the schools and district with respect to continuous improvement in ELA teaching and learning and contributes to districtwide ELA committee work.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s degree in education Valid DESE Reading license and SEI endorsement Minimum of 5 years of successful classroom ELA teaching experience and/or successful literacy intervention teaching experience Experience leading professional development or instructional coaching Strong knowledge of ELA standards and evidence-based early literacy practices (as detailed in Mass Literacy) Excellent communication, collaboration, and facilitation skills
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

): Assess students to determine appropriate interventions within the district’s MTSS Provide literacy intervention to identified students, in small groups and one-on-one Support teachers across the district in implementing curriculum in the areas of foundational skills and language comprehension. Collaborate with teachers to plan, model, and co-teach effective ELA lessons Facilitate professional learning communities (PLCs) focused on curriculum implementation, instructional strategies, and data analysis Support teachers in analyzing student work and formative and summative data to inform instructional decisions Engage with teachers in non-evaluative, systematic coaching cycles to improve instructional practices Lead or support district and school-wide literacy initiatives aligned with district, school and PRISM 1 goals Function on the districtwide team of literacy specialist teachers Organize, develop, and deliver professional development aligned with district goals and teacher and student needs Communicate effectively with stakeholders and community members, including participating in parent conferences as needed Organize, develop, and deliver community engagement events focused on literacy Stay current on research in literacy education, learning theory, adult learning, and instructional coaching Maintain an organized system and accessible location for the storage and circulation of reading and writing materials. Maintain a comprehensive inventory of ELA instructional materials and resources. Regular and on-time attendance is required Other tasks as directed by the Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning or designee
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work Environment:
Work is generally performed in a school environment during the school day; however, there may be after-school meetings.
Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the teacher is frequently required to walk, stand, sit, talk, and hear. The teacher is regularly required to bend, stoop, crouch and/or kneel. The teacher is occasionally required to lift and/or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds. Vision and hearing to a correctable level required. Must have sufficient mobility to navigate within a large school building. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
