POSITION OVERVIEW

Multi-Age Classroom Teacher, K-5 (Full Time)•Cliff Island School, 25-26 SY•Portland Public Schools is seeking a passionate, caring, and competent grade K-5 multi-age classroom teacher to maximize academic and social-emotional learning success in a small, cohesive learning environment for students within our one-room schoolhouse on Cliff Island. Candidate should possess successful experience creating a caring and inclusive community of learners coupled with positive and effective classroom management practices. Candidate should have a strong background in standards-based mathematics instruction & assessment with preferred experience using the IM Mathematics program, as well as a strong background in standards-based literacy instruction and assessment with preferred experience using the K-2 Core Knowledge in Language Arts program for K-2 and EL English Language Arts K-5 modules. Knowledge and background with implementing Wabanaki studies also is preferred. Candidate should be self-directed and self-motivated with the ability to build, foster and sustain strong, trusting relationships with Cliff Island students, families and community members, as well as PPS support staff and specialists. Candidate should possess background and knowledge of differentiated instruction, technology integration and leveraging outdoor learning opportunities.
This is an extraordinary opportunity to work in a historic, collaborative and supportive island school setting. Weekly professional development with other PPS elementary teachers will be provided, as well as collaboration opportunities with other Maine coastal island schools.

Class size will be approximately 3 students. Accommodations provided for ferry travel and parking. Dedicated teacher housing is available on Cliff Island.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Under direction of the school

Principal:

Plans and provides for appropriate learning experiences for students of different ages
Provides an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of individuals to ensure Success for Every Student
Supervises students in a variety of school-related settings
Monitors and evaluates student outcomes
Develops, selects and modifies instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students
Maintains appropriate records and follows required procedures and practices
Monitors appropriate use and care of equipment, materials and facilities
Communicates clearly and builds strong, trusting relationships with students, parents, staff and community

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of PPS curriculum, techniques for integrating curriculum, PPS policies, and effective instructional practices
Understanding of the teaching/learning process
Ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education
Ability to infuse technology into curriculum
Ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office and school based staff, students, parents and community
Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree in applicable field of education from an accredited college or university

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Travel by ferry or boat will be required for candidates who live off-island

TWO-YEAR COMMITMENT

The successful candidate should expect to make a two-year commitment to teaching at Cliff Island School. Following the two year commitment and in collaboration with the supervisor and district administration, options of transferring to an equivalent position in a PPS mainland school will be considered. The intention behind this is to make this a viable position for current PPS teachers who would like to experience teaching in a unique setting for a set period of time. In the event that a new PPS employee is selected for this position, the employee would also go through the standard two-year probationary evaluation.
