MSAD 75 is seeking a Middle School Special Educaiton Teacher to join our vibrant educational community. Together, we can inspire the next generation of learners and leaders.
General Summary:
The Middle School Special Education Teacher is responsible for providing specialized instruction and support to students with disabilities in a middle school setting. This role involves assessing student needs, developing and implementing Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), collaborating with general education teachers and parents, and ensuring students receive the necessary accommodations and modifications to access the curriculum and achieve their full potential.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Assessment:
Conduct comprehensive evaluations of students’ academic, social, emotional, and behavioral needs to determine eligibility for special education services and to inform IEP development.
IEP Development and Implementation:
Develop, write, and implement legally sound and data-driven IEPs in collaboration with parents, students (when appropriate), general education teachers, and other relevant staff. This includes setting measurable goals and objectives, identifying appropriate accommodations and modifications, and determining necessary related services.
Instruction:
Provide direct and indirect instruction to students with disabilities in various settings (e.g., special education room, co-taught classroom, individual support) using evidence-based practices and differentiated instruction to address their unique learning styles and needs.
Collaboration:
Work closely and communicate effectively with general education teachers to ensure curriculum modifications and accommodations are implemented effectively in the general education classroom. Collaborate with related service providers (e.g., speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, counselors) to provide integrated support.
Case Management:
Manage a caseload of students, including maintaining accurate and up-to-date student records, documenting progress towards IEP goals, and ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations.
Communication:
Maintain open and ongoing communication with parents/guardians regarding their child’s progress, IEP goals, and any relevant concerns.
Behavior Management:
Develop and implement positive behavior intervention plans (BIPs) as needed and provide strategies and support to students to promote positive social and emotional development.
Progress Monitoring:
Collect and analyze data regularly to monitor student progress towards IEP goals and make necessary adjustments to instruction and interventions.
Professional Development:
Participate in ongoing professional development activities to enhance knowledge and skills in special education best practices, legal requirements, and effective instructional strategies.
Compliance:
Adhere to all federal and state laws, regulations, and district policies related to special education.
Supervision :
May supervise educational technicians or paraprofessionals.
Other Duties:
Perform other duties as assigned by the school administration or Special Education Director.
Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or a related field. A Master’s degree is preferred.
Certification:
Must hold or be eligible for State of Maine Department of Education Certification as a Special Education Teacher (endorsement 282) and State of Maine Department of Education background check (CHRC) authorization.
Experience:
Experience working with middle school students with a range of disabilities.
Knowledge:
Thorough understanding of special education laws (IDEA), IEP process, assessment methods, and evidence-based instructional strategies.
Skills:
Strong collaboration and communication skills.
Ability to differentiate instruction and adapt curriculum.
Effective behavior management skills.
Proficiency in using technology for instruction and record-keeping.
Excellent organizational and time management skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Patience, empathy, and a genuine commitment to the success of students with disabilities.
