The Student Support Specialist is a vital member of our educational team, dedicated to fostering a positive, inclusive, and supportive learning environment for students across multiple grades. This position works directly with students, staff, and families to address academic needs, ensuring all students have the opportunity to thrive. The Specialist will implement proactive strategies, provide targeted interventions, and connect students and families with necessary resources to overcome challenges and achieve success.
Key Responsibilities:
Student Well-being and Support:
Serve as a trusted adult and advocate for students, helping them navigate school life. Identify and address potential barriers to student learning and participation.
Academic Assistance:
Work with students to improve organizational skills, study habits, and time management. Provide instruction to students for the courses needed. Provide academic encouragement and motivation, working with students for tutoring or academic intervention or connecting students with tutoring or academic intervention services as needed. Help students understand assignments and expectations, especially those struggling with content, navigation of virtual platforms, or workload.
Collaboration and Communication:
Communicate regularly and effectively with teachers, parents, and guardians regarding student progress, concerns, and successes. Work with outside agencies to support the school’s academic programs.
School Climate and Culture:
Contribute to a positive and respectful school culture by promoting empathy, understanding, and acceptance. Support school-wide initiatives aimed at bullying prevention, conflict resolution, and positive peer relationships. Be visible and accessible to students in various school settings (e.g., hallways, cafeteria, common areas).
Documentation and Reporting:
Maintain accurate and confidential records of student interactions, interventions, and progress. Prepare reports as required by school policy or relevant regulations.
Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Education Valid Current North Carolina Teaching License in 9-12 Math, 9-12
English, Middle Grades Math, or Middle Grades English Language Arts Experience:
Minimum of 5 years as a classroom teacher Proven record of student academic success
Skills & Abilities:
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal), with the ability to connect effectively with students, staff, and parents from diverse backgrounds Strong active listening and empathetic skills Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion Strong organizational and time management skills Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team Strong technical skills, including but not limited to familiarity with Canvas, Edgenuity, NCVPS, and Infinite Campus
