Qualifications and Requirements:

Must hold or be eligible to hold a North Carolina teaching license in the appropriate licensing area.

Goal:

To develop in each pupil reading skills that are fundamental to good communication and literate citizenship; to develop appropriate math skills that are critical to mathematical literacy; to motivate pupils to read widely for information and recreation; to develop standards for critical judgment of written and oral communications and to discover and develop special talents of pupils in the fields of reading and/or math.

Duties:

Teach content and skills in reading to elementary pupils, utilizing course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities
Adapt reading and math material and methods to develop relevant sequential assignments that guide and challenge pupils
Select and requisition books and instructional aids appropriate to the interest and maturity level of pupils; maintain required inventory records
Adapt the curriculum to provide individual, small-group, or remedial instruction to meet the needs of the individual pupil
Develop standards for critical analysis through group discussions based on a variety of mass media and classical and contemporary literature
Evaluate each pupil’s progress in reading and math skills
Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment
Identify pupil needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems
Communicate with parents and school counselors on pupil progress
Supervise pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day
Work with pupils and other classroom teachers in such activities as preparing material for the school newspaper or yearbook, assisting with PTA programs, or coordinating entries in essay contests
Administer or monitor group tests
Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs
Participate in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities
Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district, and in self-selected professional growth activities
Provide interventions to pupils in the areas of reading and math
Coordinate the school wide MTSS intervention programs
Collect, analyze and present student data to monitor the effectiveness of interventions
Maintain documentation for the title one notebook
Coordinate the instructional activities of TAs and school tutors as needed
Must be able to perform heavy work exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of forces frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to lift objects
Other duties as assigned
