08/18/2025 An Exceptional Children (EC) Occupational Course of Study (OCS) teacher develops and implements curriculum, assessments, and individualized education programs (IEPs) for students with disabilities , particularly those pursuing an OCS diploma in North Carolina. They focus on functional skills and career readiness, collaborating with Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) staff and other professionals.

Key Responsibilities:
Curriculum Development and Instruction:

Develop and implement age-appropriate, standards-based, and individualized curriculum plans, including modifications and accommodations for students with diverse needs.

Assessment and Evaluation:

Conduct ongoing assessments to monitor student progress, identify learning gaps, and inform instructional adjustments.

IEP Implementation and Coordination:

Participate in IEP meetings, develop IEP goals and objectives, and ensure implementation of IEP plans in collaboration with other professionals.

Student Support and Counseling:

Provide support and guidance to students, including behavioral interventions, counseling, and advocacy for student needs.

Communication and Collaboration:

Maintain open communication with parents, guardians, and other stakeholders, including administrators, teachers, and support staff.

Classroom Management and Safety:

Create and maintain a safe and inclusive learning environment that supports student learning and well-being.

Professional Development:

Stay current on best practices in special education and related fields, including attending workshops, conferences, and professional development opportunities.

Data Analysis and Reporting:

Collect, analyze, and report data on student achievement and progress, using data to inform instruction and program evaluation.
Collaboration with Vocational Rehabilitation (VR):
Collaborate with VR staff to support students’ transition to post-secondary education, training, and employment.

Specific Skills and Qualities:

Strong interpersonal and communication skills:
Ability to work effectively with students, parents, and other professionals.
Knowledge of special education laws and regulations:
Understanding of federal and state laws related to students with disabilities, including IDEA.
Familiarity with various assistive technologies and accommodations:
Ability to identify and implement appropriate accommodations and assistive technologies for students with diverse needs.
Strong organizational and time management skills:
Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines, maintain accurate records, and effectively utilize time.
Empathy and understanding:
Ability to connect with students and understand their individual needs and challenges.
