Child Care Resource and Referral Specialist Primary Purpose:
The CCR&R/Physical Education Nutrition Specialist plays a dual role in enhancing the quality of childcare services and promoting lifelong health and wellness among children from infancy to age 5. This position focuses on two core functions: Child Care Resource and Referral (CCR&R): Supporting childcare providers, parents, and the community to improve the quality, accessibility, and affordability of childcare.
Physical Education/Nutrition Specialist:
Promoting physical activity and nutritional wellness through age-appropriate curriculum development, training, and direct engagement with childcare centers.
Key Responsibilities:
Child Care Resource and Referral (CCR&R): Provide referrals to legal childcare options and assist families in selecting appropriate services. Collect and analyze data on childcare supply and demand. Deliver community outreach and awareness presentations. Provide technical assistance, coaching, and mentoring to childcare providers. Plan and coordinate training sessions and workshops that meet DCDEE requirements. Maintain accurate records of training participation and workshop feedback. Collaborate with community agencies and NC Pre-K Coordinator to support provider needs. Manage professional development and support initiatives, including organizing local childcare conferences. Operate and maintain a community Lending Library with relevant childcare materials.
Physical Education and Nutrition Specialist:
Develop, implement, and evaluate age-appropriate physical education and nutrition programs. Customize programs to meet the needs of children with disabilities and diverse physical abilities. Promote healthy exercise and eating habits through hands-on activities and educational materials. Conduct on-site visits, maintain progress records, and provide feedback to center directors. Train and certify in key programs (Be Active Kids, GO NAP SACC, Preventing Obesity by Design) within the first year of employment. Design SMART Goals focused on areas such as infant feeding, child nutrition, outdoor learning, and physical activity. Utilize data from self-assessments and action plans to guide quality improvement initiatives.
Essential Functions:
Develop and promote professional development plans for childcare staff. Lead community education efforts around parenting and childcare issues. Ensure timely delivery of state-mandated training and technical assistance. Collaborate with Shape NC and other TA staff to meet project goals. Maintain compliance with data reporting requirements (local, regional, NCPC). Represent the organization at community events through informational booths and presentations.
Shape NC Responsibilities and Additional Duties:
Attend staff meetings, trainings, and professional development activities as directed by the Lead TA Coordinator. Participate in regular team meetings with other TA providers and Shape NC staff to align services and goals. Market, identify, recruit, and orient new Shape NC child care sites in collaboration with sub-grantee organization staff. Deliver comprehensive Shape NC orientation sessions to child care site directors, owners, and staff using approved materials. Provide direct, ongoing technical assistance to designated Shape NC sites using research-based best practices. Offer dedicated support to the Shape NC demonstration site to model and train other child care sites. Follow the Shape NC Technical Assistance Process to coordinate and document the delivery of TA services effectively. Deliver Shape NC content using a practice-based coaching framework to support the professional growth of child care staff. Facilitate and participate in a peer coaching Community of Practice with other Shape NC TA Specialists in the county or region. Support Shape NC’s evaluation efforts by contributing to data collection activities and sharing timely, accurate information with the evaluation team. Use data from Shape

Leverage agency technology and resources to support staff and providers efficiently. Collaborate with and support the Physical Education/Nutrition Specialist (PENS) in planning and implementing nutrition education for use in classrooms. Maintain working knowledge of local health and nutrition community resources to provide referrals and support as needed. Demonstrate effective verbal and written communication with internal and external stakeholders. Work independently and collaboratively to meet organizational and program goals. Interpret, implement, and ensure compliance with organizational policies and procedures. Exhibit sustained focus, detail orientation, and accuracy in all work tasks. Manage multiple priorities and deadlines effectively while maintaining high-quality output. Occasionally travel within the county or region to provide in-person program support.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Exceptional interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills. Certified in
ECERS, ITERS, SCAERS, PAS, FCCERS
preferred. Certified trainer in ITS-SIDS, CPR, and First Aid (Red Cross or AHA). Strong understanding of early childhood development, nutrition, and physical education. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and database systems. Knowledge of community health/nutrition resources and policy implementation. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment. High degree of professionalism, confidentiality, and cultural competence.
Education and Experience:
Minimum:
Associate’s degree in early childhood education, Public Health, Physical Education/Nutrition, or a related field.
Preferred:
Bachelor’s degree and certifications in relevant training programs. 3-5 years of experience in early childhood education, technical assistance, or childcare health promotion. Experience organizing trainings, workshops, or conferences. Valid NC driver’s license, personal transportation, and insurance required. Previous experience with community outreach, health education, or resource referral strongly preferred.
Physical Requirements:
Occasional lifting of up to 25 lbs. Light physical activity such as setting up booths or carrying educational materials. Ability to sit, stand, and perform office-related tasks for extended periods. Occasional travel for site visits, training sessions, and events.
Work Conditions:
Office, classroom, and community environments. May involve occasional overnight travel and weekend work. Periodic deadlines and project-based time pressures.
