QUALIFICATIONS:
Appropriate NYS certification to teach:
Students with Disabilities (Birth
- 2nd or 1
- 6); or
School Psychology; or
School Social Worker; or
School Counselor
CPI, TCI, or similar intervention training preferred
Demonstrated ability to work with peers
Demonstrated ability to work with supervisors
Ability to motivate and instruct students with special needs
Position Overview:
The Behavior Specialist position will provide targeted behavioral and social-emotional support to students with disabilities in both preschool settings and a self-contained 12:1:1 classroom for students in grades K-2. This role is vital in promoting a safe, supportive, and inclusive educational environment that fosters communication, independence, and emotional regulation.
Key Responsibilities:
Preschool Setting:
- Collaborate with classroom teams to implement developmentally appropriate strategies and interventions to support students in social-emotional growth, self-regulation and peer interactions.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers, related service providers, and families to develop individualized behavior support plans when necessary and proactive strategies for Preschool Students, providing guidance and modeling to support implementation of such plans within the classroom setting.
12:1:1 Classroom (Grades K-2): - Support students with significant communication, behavioral, and social-emotional needs in a highly structured self-contained classroom.
- Work closely with the Special Education Teacher and Speech-Language Pathologist to promote functional communication and consistency in use of positive behavior strategies.
- Assist with the implementation of specially designed instruction and accommodations aligned to students’ IEPs.
- Assist in the development and implementation of evidence-based behavioral intervention strategies, reinforcement plans and safety plans as appropriate for individual students as well as classroom behavioral strategies and structures to enhance overall success in the classroom environment and support skill acquisition.
Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) and Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs) may also be
warranted in some cases.
Collaboration and Teamwork:
Serve as a member of the instructional support team, contributing to multidisciplinary planning and problem-solving.
Communicate regularly with families, teachers, and service providers to ensure consistency and alignment of strategies.
Participate in CSE meetings as needed and assist with progress monitoring and documentation of behavioral goals.
Qualifications:
- NYSED Certification areas include: social work, counseling, school psychologist, special education teacher, or something in a comparable certification area.
- Experience working with young children with disabilities, particularly those with behavioral and functional communication needs.
- Familiarity with principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), and trauma-informed care.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills along with the ability to remain calm and consistent in a fast-paced, emotionally complex environment.
Preferred Skills:
- CPI, TCI, or similar crisis intervention training certification.
- Experience supporting students with autism and/or developmental disabilities.
- Understanding of early childhood development and special education practices.
- Experience developing and implementing Behavior Intervention Plans.
