POSITION SUMMARY Responsible for overseeing the maintenance, care, and management of synthetic and grass playing and sports fields. Ensures the fields are properly prepared for events and maintain a high standard of safety and appearance.

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must become residents of the City of Pittsburgh prior to employment and remain a resident throughout employment.

A current, valid Class C Pennsylvania Motor Vehicle Operator’s License is required prior to appointment and must be maintained throughout employment. Must obtain Pennsylvania Pesticide Applicator Certification from the Department of Agriculture within one (1) year of date of hire and maintain the certification throughout employment.

Qualifying Requirements:

Your City of Pittsburgh application will be reviewed, and your work experience and education/training will be evaluated to determine if you meet the qualifying eligibility requirements listed below for this position. You will be sent an eligibility letter regarding your eligible/ineligible status.

WORK EXPERIENCE

The application must show two (2) years experience in field turf management, grounds keeping with focus on athletic fields and turf management, or related field. (Less than full-time experience will be calculated on a pro-rated basis.)

EDUCATION/TRAINING

The application must clearly show a Bachelor’s degree from a fully accredited institution in Turf Grass Science, Turf Science Management, Golf and/or Sports Turf Management, or related field. (See NOTE under the General Application Requirements Section above regarding the verification of education/training.)

EQUIVALENCY

Education/training and/or work experience may be substituted on a year for year basis if the application clearly shows the required number of years to meet the Total Qualifying Requirement for this position (based on the sum of work experience and education/training listed above). The Total Qualifying Requirement is six (6) years.

You must pass the written and/or performance examination(s) in order to have your name placed on the official Civil Service eligibility list for this position. POSITION DUTIES

Inspects fields regularly for potential hazards, damages, or other irregularities that could impact users’ safety.
Develops field maintenance programs utilizing best practices, including but not limited tp soil sampling, seeding and sodding, integrated pest management, surface maintenance activities, and nutritional programs.
Oversees the maintenance, operation, and repair of turf management equipment; ensures all equipment is properly stored, maintained, and in good working order.
Maintains detailed field maintenance reports.
Tracks and reports all issues, repairs, and improvements made to the field.
Manages field care budget, purchases and manages inventory supplies, tracks expenses, and recommends cost-saving implementations.
Plans and oversees athletic ground and field renovation projects, including working with external contractors. Teaches department employees best management practices for field turf management, including inspections, proper mowing techniques, infill maintenance, appropriate fertilization and water patterns, pest and disease control, etc.
Collaborates with department employees in planning for maintenance of fields and ensures maintenance is completed to a high standard. Collaborates with event coordinators, coaches, vendors, stakeholders, and other City departments.
