We are an independent coeducational day school serving students who are intelligent and imaginative but find it difficult to learn in a conventional classroom setting. Founded in 1976, the school enrolls 78 students in kindergarten through ninth grade. We are located in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

Job Description:

The physical education teacher or recreation therapist is responsible for implementing and developing engaging physical and health education programs that promote students’ physical fitness, teamwork, and overall well-being for neurodiverse learners. Prepare age-appropriate physical and health education lessons in accordance with the student’s physical abilities. Adapt teaching methods that are appropriate for neurodiverse learners that teach principles of fitness, movement, sportsmanship, and teamwork. Classroom management. Plan and organize a variety of physical activities, including individual and team sports, fitness exercises and recreational games. Supervise students at various points in the school day including recess, lunch, arrival, dismissal, and transitions between classes. Provide extra support, as needed, to students with physical, behavioral, or linguistic limitations. Promote a safe and inclusive environment by enforcing safety guidelines and adapting activities to accommodate diverse needs and abilities. Coordinate each day to determine daily tasks and adjust based on the needs of the students. Leading parent-teacher’s meetings. Chaperoning field trips and other school community events. Responsible for after-school sports. Support the school’s mission to provide a safe and caring learning environment that celebrates students’ strengths, builds self-esteem, and develops self-advocacy. Contribute positively to the overall learning environment in the school.

Qualifications:

A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in physical education or recreational therapy with a current teaching certificate. State certification/license. Strong knowledge of physical fitness, sports rules and health education. Preference is given to applicants with Special Education experience. Experience using technology for instruction. A passion for teaching neurodiverse learners. Strong classroom management skills. Organized and thoughtful planner. A whole-child approach to teaching. The ability to be flexible and work well with a team.
