Secondary Special Education Teacher

JOB DESCRIPTION

The special educator plans and provides for appropriate, rigorous learning experiences for students with disabilities in a variety of educational settings. The professional in this position is responsible for implementing the IEP and providing specially designed instruction in the least restrictive environment, such that the students benefit from the general education curriculum to the greatest extent possible when supported with supplemental aids, accommodations, and other needed support.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Certification as a Special Educator. Appropriate certification for the grade levels assigned (Secondary)Experience as a special education teacher at the secondary level. Successful direct experience with children exhibiting academic, social, emotional and behavioral challenges. Understanding of critical practices and systems of positive behavior support. Experience with providing specially designed instruction in the general education setting.

Evidence of successful engagement with families. Knowledge of state and federal special education eligibility criteria. Knowledge of special education laws and regulations and willingness to implement the special education process. Conducting transition assessments and developing transition plansExperience with the development and implementation of Individualized Education Programs.

OTHER DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Strong verbal and written communication skills. Capable of responding simultaneously to a variety of requests from families, staff and administration. Sensitivity to students’ academic, social, emotional and behavioral challenges.

Creativity and flexibility to develop successful services for student academic success.

Ability to interact with students, families, staff and administration and effectively handle issues utilizing a problem solving approach. Capable of working collegially with staff and administration. Ability to prioritize the needs and requests of students, families, staff and administration within the school setting and respond in a professional and efficient manner. Demonstrated proficiency in Google applications.
