JOB SUMMARY

To assist classroom staff and cooperate in a supportive role carrying out developmentally appropriate activities in according with the requirements set by the Head Start Performance Standards.

We encourage applicants from all backgrounds and education levels with the skills listed below to apply: What You’ll Do Follow Head Start Performance Standards as they apply to classroom learning environment. Following an approved curriculum approach and daily schedule, develop and implement daily lesson plans, which reflect mandated elements, parental and cultural influences, and promote the social, emotional, physical, and cognitive developments of Head Start Children. Follow a consistent schedule which includes small and large group experiences, choice time, music and movement, large and small motor activities, skill development, three meals, and effective transitions between activities. Sanitize classroom equipment and laundry. Work closely with co-teaching staff by learning and utilizing the required curriculum. Utilize lesson plans at the direction of classroom staff, which reflect mandated elements, parental and cultural influences, and promote the social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development of Head Start children. Provide an atmosphere that promotes and reinforces parental involvement in the classroom. Observe, assess, and record the behavior of all children assigned to classroom. Observe and record behaviors of children to assist the teacher in the identification of each child’s strengths and areas to grow. Develop and maintain complete and concise records for each child. Complete daily attendance records. Inventory, request and store adequate and appropriate classroom materials and supplies. Maintain confidentiality at all times. Assist with meal service as needed. Attend meetings, trainings, and appropriate professional development activities when required. Notify parent/guardian in the event of accidents involving students (minor or major). Assist in maintaining a safe and healthy learning environment for all children including special needs children. Exercise discretion and sound judgment in the performance of assigned duties. Responsible for keeping accurate in-kind records for classroom. Assist with bus duty when necessary. Assure/assist in general maintenance and security of facility. Encourage experimentation, exploration, problem solving, cooperation, socialization, and choice making; ask open-ended questions and listen respectfully to the answers. Assist in setting up environment (indoor/outdoor) for the activities of the day. Use developmentally appropriate practices to facilitate activities with groups and individuals. Perform other duties as required and directed.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required Comprehension:

Demonstrate classroom ability, typically one year pre-school classroom experience or equivalent. Must be cooperative and display a positive attitude toward working as a team with other staff members. Must understand and respect confidential information regarding children, families, and the program. Knowledge of typical behaviors/expectations of three- and four-year-old children typically gained through a minimum of one year of relevant experience.

Communication:

Strong communication skills, especially good listening & writing skills.

Empathy:

Must have empathy for children and low-income families. Must exercise discretion and sound judgment in the performance of assigned duties.

Health and Safety:

Must possess a valid First Aid and CPR certificate or obtain one within six months of employment. Must pass fingerprinting background check. Be in good health and undergo an annual TB test, physical every 3 years, as well as a random drug screening. Be physically fit for children’s activities indoors and outdoors.
